I had been lucky enough to prototype (well sorta) an EQ Pier Abbate had designed (the APP 540) based on the api 553 and 550. Somewhat like Capi's lc53 but different. I had seen a member on GDIY use the filters for a 2u dual channel and saw that they were 500 series format so I asked Pier about it I had built other projects by Pier and know he is a really smart designer so was excited when he said he thought they might be available. There was a catch though. The pcb it turned out though had a few errors which was why Pier wasn't selling them. Feeling like a challengeand always in a quagmire of some sort anyways I asked Pier if i could explaining I was completely aware of the risks. Truth be told they weren't that bad (definitely not okay for a beginner) but I can definitely see his reluctance to sell them to the general public. Having redrawn circuits and having pcbs made myself I know how easy it is to make a mistake (it is sooooooo easy and done far more often than you would believe). It costs and it hurts and its terribly frustrating.
After getting most of the eq populated by Pier's mostly complete BOM and excellent schematics) I then designed the front panel in fpd using a pdf (ahh fpd is pdf backwards) that Pier sent me as a ruler (equipped with distances in mm and all). I had been holding on to some really sweet kilo knobs similar to that which Manley uses and I must say; its like they were just waiting for this eq. They are perfect.
At any rate the EQ's are pretty sexy and so far I have used them on acoustic guitars and snare. They do something great to the top end of acoustics and you can really get the boom/snap to come out with 12k and 800hz boost. They use two DOA's for gain and which DOA's that are used seems to have a dramatic difference on the sound. I had gar 2520 and melcor 1731 in one and just melcors in the other at one point and there was a difference.
I used a Cinemag and Ed Anderson transformer at first but now they are both Ed Anderson's 2503's.
Anyways pictures speak louder than words so... well I'll upload better pictures after I take them.
Oh and thanks Pier, the APP 540's are f***ing awesome!
