Quite creative I'd say.

Imagine what life must be like to have this much money/time on your hands.

And yet the sounds it makes are completely generic and boring!

I would recommend checking out the videos of the band he is in, Wintergaten. Four players that love to create music, and do a wonderful live show.
This guy is the lead player, and simply had an idea to create something "fantasimical".
He is to be admired, not mocked.

Good for him, but it's not mocking someone to say you don't like the musical results. Quite the opposite, it's judging them seriously. Experimentation is great, but I don't have to like the actual improvisation or the sounds. Where is the song? This seems to me just smoke and mirrors, like a lot of unconvincing trends these days. Keep in mind that the synthesis is just generic rack stuff + the glock parts.
I did check it out. Their music is pretty one note and twee, not really my thing at all. Variations on the same feelings, not a lot of emotional range. That's not always a bad thing, but at you least you have to like those feelings, which I don't.
They just seem like annoying amateurs with costumes and a shtick to be honest. Not exactly the Beatles.

It's performance art, and by definition valid at some level - also a more extreme example of the reason I don't go to most concerts. The last thing I want to 'hear' is a musical composition or performance compromised by theatrics. That and I'm not a big fan of everyone in the audience singing along ..or talking, yelling, ..and it goes downhill from there. On the other hand, if it's the theater you came for.. I'm sorry, did I go OT?

Damn...tough crowd...I thought the music was pretty damn cool. But what do I know? Joesph, are you in a band with Jeff Beck and touring with Adrian Belew? Anyway...meh. The noise floor is high.

Hmm.... I posted it because it reminded me of a Rube Goldberg machine that made music.

it's amazing.

Yeah, but can it play "My Heart Will Go On?"
>tough crowd
Laughing out loud. The machine is totally awesome, I love stuff like that. The marble conveyor/return system and staged melody marble hopper are particularly noteworthy. I imagined for an instant there's no sequencers, no DAWs, not laptops or Mac Mini's. All multitrack music has to be created with marbles, marimbas and wood. It's ECO! Save the planet.
Also, those legs are so spindly for such a massive machine. Now let's see him build one that plays "Hocus Pocus" by Focus.

Yeah, but can it play "My Heart Will Go On?" The modulation would be a bitch...

Yeah, but can it play "My Heart Will Go On?" Now let's see him build one that plays "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. If you watch the videos that cover the construction of the machine, it becomes obvious that by moving pegs around, he can play any melody -- it seems to be based on how a player piano works, but with a bass guitar added. Also, note that the mechanism has MIDI triggers, which get captured into a DAW, and then in the end, the sound of the machine picked up by the mics gets blended in with the virtual instruments triggered by the MIDI data. I find it fresh and attractive. Sure, it eventually gets old, but so does [place your favorite artist here]. You don't have to like the music to appreciate the art. (at least that is what Music Appreciate 101 teaches.)

And I appreciate what it takes to design a machine like that. I'm fascinated by industrial production machinery. I love "How It's Made" on TV. I remember being mesmerized as a kid hearing a carosel piano roll calliope that had pneumatic cymbals and drums along with the organ. It was live music played robotically. It put me in a trance.

Yeah - there was a McDonalds in my hometown that had a player piano that also had choreographed animatronics. Think it was all the same machine. I was obsessed.

Ha, I work with good players, but not on that level. Hand built instruments are cool, but my first point was they should sound original too, this isn't a swarmatron. Process wise it's cool but then there are other instruments that do both well. The music and stage act is schmaltzy, machine or no. I was asked to check it out, that's my impression.
