It seems many believe the ATM25 was discontinued some years ago, then briefly returned in a Limited Edition guise about 2012 before vanishing once more forever. If you are to believe Audio Technica USA the replacement for the discontinued ATM25 was the ATM250. About a year ago I decided to look for a used ATM25 for use as a floor Tom mic and also as an alternative kick drum mic. I started scouring eBay for a decent used one but suddenly noticed quite a few ATM25's for sale listed as brand new. www.ebay.com.au/itm/AUDIO-TECHNICA-ATM25-Drum-Microphone-/111916065953?hash=item1a0eb7a4a1:g:VBYAAOSwZQxW3l81I quickly became suspicious as ATM25's had been discontinued for almost ten years and these 'new' ATM25's must surely be fakes. Well it turned out they were not fakes and the ATM25 was never discontinued. It is still alive and well and being manufactured by Audio Technica in Japan... for the Japanese market. www.audio-technica.co.jp/mi/show_model.php?modelId=2518Why it ceased to be available anywhere else is a mystery to me? Anyway I bought one from an online Japanese music store and happened to mention to a friend of mine who runs a PA company I had bought a brand new ATM25 from Japan. He didn't believe me until he saw mine and then promptly bought one himself. So the ATM25 is NOT back... it simply NEVER went away in the first place. In fact I may even buy a couple more!

I've used ATM25's on toms for years and years. I have 4 of them I bought way back in day for 30-50$ each before they became high-priced desirables.. I would love one more, but I'm not paying the ridiculous prices they go for these days.

Some have said the ones in Japan are New old Stock, others say it's still being made. I have also heard that because of some part of how it's made they can't sell them outside of Japan . Who knows ? Who cares as long as you can still get them!

Here they are on the AT Japanese website... www.audio-technica.co.jp/mi/show_model.php?modelId=2518They are also listed as ROHS compliant so I don't know why they aren't available outside of Japan.

I have seen used ones sell for more than this on US eBay auctions because I think the perception is they are no longer made and it's getting hard to find decent ones. Not so!

Someone at NAMM said they were re-releasing them in the US soon (but didn't give any more info) Heard that too, but not from anybody who was from AT!
