New pair of John Allen / High Performance Stereo / Crites A-55G mid drivers (Squawkers) for my Klipsch La Scala. Immediate reduction of shiny halo in the upper mids. Much more transparent/revealing, stridency down. All kinds of vocal textures and efx are clear which were hardly evident; stuff that doesn't show at all up on my JBL LSR28P's. Test data from a Klipsch specialist showed a 4db improvement in THD compared to the best previous version. Even bigger wider and more open than the La Scala already were!

Nice one Doug The best Klipsch I have heard had the mid replaced with the Radian with the Be diagaphram!

Heritage Klipsch get significantly better with modern mid and treble drivers, along with improved crossover parts. Lots of people change the mid horn out entirely, some go to a 2" driver, though if you aren't running super loud the stock horn is fine in a lot of people's opinions. I don't run all that loud, and they sound huge at low volumes. They make my standard stereo speakers sound like fuzzy little boxes.

I bought a Tapco 4400. Waiting on it to arrive...hopefully it survives the trip! Some people think they sound like garbage, but samples I've heard online are pretty neat. We'll see.
I also bought an old big box EHX Q-Tron. I have no idea why, I'm never going to play something on guitar that needs an envelope filter, but sometimes the Mutron-ish sound is what people want. I think it'll sound cool on keys (maybe if I ever track down a Rhodes or a Clavinet at a decent price...)

I got dis Two Notes Captor load box. I am playing my tube amp heads cranked up straight into Cubase via Apollo line input. I was messing with the Line 6 Helix which is fun, but the Two Notes Wall of Sound cab/mic/room sim is just that much more featured and toneful when it comes to the IR part of the equation. Line 6 has all the great FX though. I feel like this is some real next level stuff. I can see why these are so popular. ESPECIALLY for cranked up angry wailing guitar tones without specifically destroying your ears, even for long sessions!

I got another Focusrite Clarett this time an 8Pre for my secondary computer. Which is currently under construction, hopefully will be running tomorrow.
Maybe more importantly, I deconstructed my weird monitor stack.
I thought the JBL LSR had better bass than the Polk RTi A3. But in reality, the fact is that spot about 1/2 meter lower on the desk, has more bass and just frankly sounds better.
I also had to adjust the acoustic treatment slightly to get the L and R balanced.
Another factor is any of the speakers seemed to sound better without a bunch of speakers piled on top of them, more room in the sound. So now I'm just down to the main pair, RTi A3, and the little cube speakers are daintily placed on top.
I've just been jamming out records all day getting used to the new sound... it's pretty good. The bass comes through so clear now. Same speakers, just a small adjustment in the room placement. Also they are vertical now not tipped on the side. The image feels different. A little more narrow maybe, but a pretty good center.
The JBL speakers will now be boxed up for future usage.

When did you get this? I've been waiting for these to come into stock at sweetwater. I think I need to give my sales rep a call. Just when I posted, maybe Nov 4. Sweetwater should have them in stock, I just checked. That's where I got mine. The Bugera PS-1 Power Soak however is pre-order right now so I didn't get one yet. The Two Notes Captor comes highly recommended from me. I almost wish I had two. If you get it, make sure to register your serial so you can start using the Wall of Sound plugin with some IR's they include. And check out the OwnHammer IR stuff. Line 6 Helix Native is also worth looking at, especially for the FX section in my opinion.

I finally got around to finishing the second of the AML EZ1081-pre modules. I stuck 'em into the 5K rack so I could have some independent control over the output. One thing these modules lack is an output control, but in all fairness to Colin there is really no way he could have found the real estate inside the box to fit one; the trannies are pretty hefty. I have to say they really do sound amazing -a real large, "show-boat" kind of sound. I get the feeling that these will get most use for front of the mix elements -lead vocals, guitar solos...whatever you want to make pop. They also have a nice way of breaking up if you drive them fairly hard.

Traded my G&L ASAT Special to strangeways for his Sage SE-1 preamps. Also picked up a RMI 300A Electro-Piano and a Sound Workshop 242A spring reverb.

Well, the Yamaha MLA8 was a dud.
I bought it from Bain Capital online and it arrived in an undamaged box with a big chunk of the main PCB loose in the case. Channel 1 was DOA and several traces were cut due to the damage.
I took it to Banjomart SF and they did the right thing with zero prodding— full refund, including S&H.
Too bad, as I found out yesterday that two of the three Phoenix DRS pres at the project studio I share are down. Naturally we're starting basics on Wed.
But, it turns out the drummer has at least a couple of those AEA Ribbon Pres he can bring so we'll be covered. Funny how things work out.

Aw man, I hate it when that happens. "Funny how things work out," Absolutely. I've been having those moments recently a lot myself.

Just picked up a Fender Rhodes (these things are ****** heavy), plus a couple of DS101 500 gates with an A Designs 2 rack this past week. Sold off a fair few things but that's for another thread (one feeds the other..).

I just picked up one of these... I'm not sure if it measures in years but if it does then I think I'm probably well and truely done for already as it went completely off scale when I first tried it out!

Lexicon PCM80 and a Yamaha Pro R3. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on my favorite Yamaha! Yeah... It's all your fault that I was even looking at the R3! I did find some talk that the Rev500 was the same as the R3 just not as tweakable and built a little more consumer. Any thoughts on that?

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on my favorite Yamaha! Yeah... It's all your fault that I was even looking at the R3! I did find some talk that the Rev500 was the same as the R3 just not as tweakable and built a little more consumer. Any thoughts on that? Sure blame me! R3 is far more than a more tweekable rev500, this was developed at the same time as their convolution unit, I was told the algorithmic guys were not to happy that Yamaha was going convolution and discontinuing Alogrithmic development. Add in the fact that Yamaha as popular as the REV's were they just never got the respect of TC Lexicon AMS! It always felt like Yamaha pro audio Hated the fact that the most respected Yamaha pro piece was a Speaker from a crappy consumer rack system and these guys put all that in the pro 3. It is also a Clearmountian secret weapon, he loves the short verbs!
