Got a Vacuvox V41 EF12 in today from VK (thanks, RGO, damnit!). Unloaded it from the box and heard stuff moving around so pulled the top off. Couple of plastic parts for voltage selection rattling in there which I couldn't figure out where they came from (voltage selector was intact) but super bummed when I see one of the EF12 tubes that's suspended by springs had a spring off and all but one black wire snapped off of the tube pcb.
Waiting to hear back on solution from VK but packing this thing back up. Hope to try one out soon.
My rep did send me Dan Alexander's book and it's pretty awesome. So, at least there's that to enjoy.

I ordered 5 Samar MG33’s on Labor Day, still not here and only 4 on the way…, none too pleased considering I was going to try them out on a drum session this weekend, a month to receive an order after putting out $1,800.00 is bad enough, making my first payment on my VK card without even having them made my blood heat up significantly 🥵

No, I dealt with VK where I bought them, Samar sent 4 of them ground to Michigan from Utah last week(3 weeks too long) and then Michigan VK sent them to me ground in SoCal, an absolute slow road scenic trip middle finger salute to the guy who put out the cash…., and the 5th mic hasn’t been sent at all yet, if I don’t receive the 5th mic by the end of the first week of October I’m going to file a complaint with the cc co and demand a full refund and return all of the ones I should have by then, it’s such bad customer service on both VK and Samar that it deserves a return and a good day sirs, I’ll take my business elsewhere(the mics were on a Labor Day sale, if you can’t meet demand why would you put them on sale?)

Just the two Lightning Boy Audio 2020S (S is for Steel) transfos are new, well bought used. They are joining some other transfo boxes :-)
The LB 2020S sounds fantastic!! It really holds up with other transformers I have. Really nice low end saturation. Incredible on snare and kick. Softens hats. I took some spectra in REW and will try to post that and some sound examples this weekend. As you can tell, I've got a bit of a infatuation with transformers. Something about how a passive contraption of wound metal can influence sound just fascinates me.

Thanks! Your PSS is the cadillac of the built ones. It's one of the most gratifying devices ever. It certainly rewards exploration. For the unbuilt ones, I'm furiously plotting what Frankenstein device I'll birth them into.

Rickenbacker 660. Bad picture, long drive, nice guitar. Also a Seymour Duncan Antiquities bridge pickup for my wife’s Gretsch BST-1000. Her tribute to Kim Shattuck of The Muffs guitar. Also a set of vintage tuners for my ‘66 Fender Mustang. Got a couple bent ones and found a nice set while in Ohio at a great price.

My Stam SA-609 MkII with the updated input and interstage transformers finally came! 7 month wait with about a dozen missed ETAs but the sound is absolutely satisfying.
The tone is addictive and just printing stems through it without compression, one of the two modes can enhance anything I've tried through it.
Metal knob on drums bus or limiting a snare or overhead/room Mics is perfect for my taste and the reason I bought it. It's also an instant classy thickener for guitars, keys or digital synths.
Modern mode sounds slightly better on vocals (a touch more open and wide), and nearly always wins on mix bus. It also tightens bass stems in a cool way.
Also got a pair of Mother Audio WAIs - spectacular for the price. I tried them quickly in series after the 609 and the combo adds a tasteful sense of depth. Highs are gorgeous, lows tighter than I expected too. Mid band is probably much more useful on individual sources but is very musical and can be cranked (like the Olympic MicEQs).

Louis Electric Cobra 183 - Dumble Style head. I have had a few D style amps and I think the Louis Electric is currently one the best ones made.
I have a Fryette Power Load IR coming to use with it as well.
Looking forward to this one and getting another live/recording D-style rig built around a head.

What is it about the Dumble amps (besides rarity) that makes them so sought after? I just know they are legendary and the one time I saw one the price was $10K I think.

They aren't really 'sought after' any more than blackface Fender or Marshall, but there is a subset of guitar players who like the 'D" style cascading gain and unique approach to Fender/Marshall tone stack, beautiful cleans and the smooth lead tones. Each amp Howard built was different than the others. It's a long history and well hashed out
Alot great builders do the 'D" thing well. Two Rock, Red Plate, Fuchs...
As for the originals, yeah, rare and with a mystic that was still strong when Howard died. Anyway, they are closer to $50K-$100K and upwards. It all depends on the amp. The 183 in this cobra head badge, refers to Dumble amp 183 build. A well known great amp.
In the end, means nothing Tony! Were all just a bit cocked, but at this stage in my life, its all about refinement of what I am already doing. And alot of experimentation.

Welp, the second Germ Comp arrived so as to initiate mixbuss patrol and I swiftly set about bombastically murdering the bass frequencies. And, because Germy seemed to be crying out for a partner in crime we recruited Zulu to slice the shrillness from the hats and bloom out the bass freq to a VOG rumble. Here is an way over the top example for fun. Somebody forgot to tell Germy that he is not an EQ!! I knew this from the mono unit I had, but holy smokes when on a mix it is insane! The Germ drive majorly boosts bass (and gain), but the NF knob tames lows and mids (and drops gain). So judicious dialing can get a bassy mix, a thinner/higher freq mix, or a very mid forward mix (less Drive and medium NF). But- what's the fun in being judicious with new gearz? So I set about trying to get the bioggest rumbly bass freq I could without majorly distorting. The raw original track had a weird snap in the spots where the kick and bass landed at the same time. So I wanted to smooth that out. In the process I created a wall of low frequency material lol. The tracks are matched to LUFS. Interestingly, the compressed track has a higher peak level and the waveform shows more transients. I think I was pumping the comp a bit (well, actually I know I was lol you can hear it), so I reshaped the envelopes. Cool! Interestingly also the comp was triggering HARD off the vocals so the rest of the mix pumped to the vocals. If I want to use this on the mix I will probably be doing some pre-deemphasis of the mid frequencies. Later I'll detail the agony of deciding how to go about getting a second one for mix buss duty (sell first and but matched pair? try to get the seond matcvhed to the first?). For now, enjoy some rumble. There is no other comp like the Germ comp. I got it for drum buss (and still the mono uses I did). With the wet/dry knob I'll bet I can get it to be useful on mixbuss. I realize the audio path is littered with the charred corpses of Icaruses who tried to conquer the Germ Comp and use it on mix buss duty. But the human condition is such that we must try where others have failed :-) https%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/20240929-dirty-rawhttps%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/20240929-dirty-germ-zulu

I've been itching for a second pair of 1073s, so I grabbed a Stam Audio 1073 MPA+. I had to wait a little bit, but it arrived today and sounds great. I posted some clips of it next to my AMS Neve 1073 DPX in the thread below if anyone is interested.

This is the closest I've ever gotten to Dumble:
www.effectrode.com/news/50000-tube-preamp-pedal/www.effectrode.com/knowledge-base/recording-direct-with-blackbird-preamp/The developer is extremely talented and makes some of the most unique and historically accurate tube pedals in existence. He and Kingsley are my two favorite developers. The circuit is technically accurate to some of the Dumble circuits from what I understand, but actually I bought it a few years ago when I was starting guitar and had no idea what Dumble was. This pedal sounds so incredible. Pristine soaring highs and meaty tight bass. I could go on and on about Phil's pedals but that's a story for another day. Back to your regular programming.

Curiosity got the best of me and ordered an AML ez627. It was built and less than the cost of the kit and came with a second set of tubes, sort of a no brainer…4U for a mono EQ is a hard one to justify but I think I’m just going to find a cheap rack to keep it in and pull it out when needed (if I like it)
