INTERESTED? Except for the M49v and U67ri, the finest Neumann mics being made today Hey now let’s not forget the U89 and TLM170! Opinions vary and mine are all from the 80s and 90s, but colleagues say they aren't quite the same today as they were 30 years ago.

I don't think that is always necessarily a bad thing. It's altogether possible that if you compared a brand new, say U87 right off the line, that was made in the 80's, it would sound no better than, or maybe not even as good as, a brand new 2023 model. We will never know because that's not possible. As with many vintage mics, many of them sounded different from one another anyway. How many U47's does one have to buy before you get one that is magical? We all know they were not all created equal. Yes I'll have a vintage U47 even if it's not a great one.

That being said, new in box ancient gear shows up. in 2012, I bought a NIB 1972 Ludwig supra phonic snare drum and it has been on thousands of songs over the past decade. I have heard of folks finding NIB or nearly new 70s U87s and KM84s (like our very own Chad). . . and I don't know if it's true but someone in our field in the past 20 years found a NIB Telefunken U47. Our own professor Dan found a barely touched 1960 Telefunken U47... and everything he's recorded with it and shared makes my ears pop!!

Very true, but we do have to remember their are to factors in aging, use and time in general. NIB is not vacuum sealed, the pesky environmental factors are going to change in some ways the electro mechaniics, the real question is when it comes to a mic is a 30 year old NIB sample better than one that has seen use and everything thing is nice a loose?

Good point. New in box doesn't usually mean actually new. Rare circumstances occur where one can be opened and it's as if it just got delivered from the factory. We should all be so lucky!

Even then it's still a 40 year old microphone even if it has never been taken out of the box. As Eric said, things age due to nothing more than environmental factors and that has to have a bearing on the sound compared to when all the components were brand new. Especially with condenser mics that have more electronic components in them.

As posted in the VSX thread when I ordered last week, I bought Slate VSX Platinum and it showed up today. At $349 all in ($100 Slate sale, $50 B&H coupon, B&H credit card to rebate CA tax), the sale price pushed me over the edge.
I don't mix on headphones, but I do scrutinize tracks and mixes with them. Waves Nx (and later CLA Nx) showed me the "virtual listening environment" concept was valid, but I didn't have one of the small list supported at the time (now I see they support 270 phones, including at least one or two of mine). But VSX has a little better flexibility (no need to change plugins to change rooms, for one thing...though I suspect I'll mainly pick one room and set of speakers). It works with SoundSource, as does Nx, but I see Slate is working on their on own systemwide solution as well. It's seems to be more actively developed than the Waves product.
Anyway, it sounds decent enough to be useful. Fits pretty well on me, the headband is fine, the cups seem about the same level of discomfort as any of my others (Sony, AKG, Blue, all circumaural like VSX), which is to say they'll mostly bug me from heat buildup over time, but I typically don't wear them for extended periods. Oh, and I've seen comments about the thin cable, but it seems fine to me, a little more robust looking than the long piece of linguini the Blues came with. It's braided (was it different before?).

Also, the UMT70S is on sale at Alto Music (BF15 code) That's even less expensive than I bought one 10 years ago in Europe. That's amazing.

I bought an Arturia Polybrute which is the only synth that I've gotten since selling my Kurzweil 2500 XS and Ensoniq ESQ-1 in about 2001. It's so much much fun to be hand on knobs and sliders with analog filters and oscillators than midi mapped out soft synths on my keyboard controller and it sounds stellar. The mod matrix is fantastic and makes creating sounds a breeze. The morphing feature is brilliant and I am loving this thing. It's also built like a brick shihouse.
I also recently bought a pair of APS Klasik 2020 monitors. They replaced my KRK V6 series 2 pair.

UTA EQ-500s just shipped for me. Excited to try them. I also have to put a word in for 29 pedals. Their FLWR overdrive is one of the best I’ve ever used. A lot of guitar players balk at the price and design but studio guys will realize almost instantly why they’re so great. Sensitive to play, detailed, can run off a variety of voltages, built like a rock. Basically holds up to scrutiny with a sensitive mic put in front of the amp. These are on my list for sure. Curious to see what you and Bat think.

And the Klasik are a great choice. I use the 2015 version myself.

I picked up a pair of AKG C452 bodies...I have an extra CK1 capsule that needs a mate. Also broke down and got all the Liquidsonics stuff...been liking them so far! I was in desperate need of some reverb/modulation inspiration.
Lusting after a ES-335 12 string after recording with one this weekend...so much easier to play than my Rickenbacker 450 with the tiny neck.

Drum roll please... just picked up a current model Martin D-28. Plays and sounds exactly like what a D-28 should in my opinion. Story time.
_____
When I was first learning to play guitar I was using my mom's nylon string to pick a few chords. But I couldn't get it to sound like the records I was trying to copy (mostly Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, type stuff... yeah I didn't have a lot of friends!). So my mom says "that's because they're playing steel string guitars."
"OK, I need one of those."
So my mom gets me one I can borrow from a friend of hers. I play the stuff I know and it really does sound more like the records. In fact, pretty much JUST like the records except for my lack of skill. I do that for a few months and save up a few hundred bucks, time to buy myself my own "steel string" guitar.
We return the borrowed guitar and my mom is driving me around doing some guitar shopping. Everything I try sounds terrible. Maybe $400 isn't enough to get a decent guitar (this is 1993 money so maybe like $700 today?). We go to a shop and I'm talking to the guy at the shop and just kind of feeling like giving up. The guy goes...
"Well, what have you been playing on? Maybe we can find something like that in your price range."
"Oh, umm... I think it's called a D-28 or something?"
"A Martin D-28?"
"Yeah, that's it! Have you heard of it?"
"You've been learning to play guitar on a borrowed Martin D-28?"
"Yeah, it's my mom's friend's guitar."
"Well, that must be some friend. Anyway, that's the greatest guitar ever made, you're not going to find anything like it. You're gonna need to lower your expectations."
____
And so I did. For thirty years! Until... today!!! The wait is over folks. I finally got my guitar.

got a 3pk of ATM230's. They are small and built very well. heavy for their size. I like the built-in mount (and they don't fall off like the f#@&%^n 421) Planning to use on toms. did some real quick tests and they sound pretty good (I have MD-421's too) and I'll work more on positioning, but initial tests showed pretty good cymbal rejection. I will use them on a couple sessions tomorrow. if all goes well then I'll sell 2 of my 4 x 421's, which will more than pay for the ATM230's (which I got at 10% off, no tax, no shipping... about the price of 1 x 421 for the 3pk).
I've got a matched pair of sE Electronics SE8's on the way too (should see them Friday). planning to use them more for acoustic guitars, other strings, maybe percussion, etc.
