Ordered a pair of Tegeler's, a Creme bus comp/master EQ and a Magnetismus 2 transient shaper/VCA comp, looking forward to adding them to the multi-bus blend set-up. 2nd unit arrived this week, finally had time to remove it from it's custom crate and power it up. Have to mix 3 more shows this weekend, then maybe I can get a breath to wire them into some inserts to test on some mixes: SNIPPED the PHOTO I'm really intrigued by the Magetismus. Tell me more moar moar, please.

Tell me more moar moar, please. Had a quick run with both boxes tonight. The Creme's bus comp is quite transparent but the EQ steals the show. Just 5 db of boost available on the top and bottom, but it sounds killer on a mix. The Magnetismus 2 is a specialized box, the 3 knob compressor works well for adding sustain to percussion, while the transient shaper adds harmonics to that sustain. At first I was leaning toward the Cobalt transformer for smoothness, but on a track with marimba/bell tones in it, the iron transformer lifted them right out of the track. The boxes make a nice pair, basically two ends of the VCA compressor spectrum.

I have been wanting a Silver Bullet since before I interviewed Brad for Tape Op, and that was many years ago.
I sold a rack of 4 mic pres and found a used Mk1 for exactly the same amount of cash. So I went for it. Can’t wait.

U47 > 1073 pre/EQ > LA2A It's a sound I love and is so iconic to my ears. I also have kept a AEA RPQ fet Ribbon pre and a Millennia STT-1. But my desire for pre's is sated. The only pre I can see myself adding at some point is the Coil 286 :-)

I'm happier with less options these days, the 3 pres I kept ( well 4 because I have Dav too but only use for remote stuff) sound so different from each other that there's never a ton of back and forth, it's pretty clear which one fits. Plus pretty much every studio I go to has BAEs so it's nice to have something a bit different!

I use mine with Schoeps CMCs to record piano mostly. Put the mics, my soundcard and the Dav in my macbook backpack and I'm good to go. It's not as clean as a Forrsell but it's a nice utility preamp and definitely a step up most interface pres. Since you already have the rpq and the Millenia I'm not sure how useful it would be though

Those DAV pre's aren't as squeaky clean as you'd imagine IC based pre's would be, Mick Hinton (the designer) has defiantly managed to get a bit of hair in there even though there's no Xformer I/O. When I directly compared the DAV BG1 to the Millennia STT-1 it sounded very close to the tube channel of the STT-1 not the solid state channel which surprised me - in a nice way. The BG1 does have a larger than life sound - it really is a great pre - especially when you think of the quality on offer for the price - a genuine bargain in my book.

I've never heard the Millenia tube pre, I'm familiar with the 8pre 2 unit one, which sounds ok. I agree the Dav has more color than most clean amps. And yeah I use it for remote stereo recordings, mostly piano, it's never disappointed. It's a nice preamp to have around though I admit I've rarely used it in a studio environment.

Newest pieces from the past month. Finally grabbed an API 550A. Love my Capi BT50’s. they sound different. Neither is better or worse. Also Soyuz 1973 just a couple weeks ago. Still exploring this one but reallyyyyyy liking this so far. May grab another for Toms. I have a United Studio Technologies Twin87 coming this week that I’m excited to check out.

I just picked up a few pieces- Auditronics PEQ-82 stereo eq. This is the EQ from the 501 console but this is somehow different. top end is more open, low end is huge. Was going to fix/flip but I think its a keeper.
Ehrlund EHR-E. Weird mic with triangular diaphragm. Super clean and clear, miles deep low end. I might need a second one.
Uher m534. Great sounding cheap vintage dynamic.

Nice find with the Auditronics EQ!
I picked up a Peavey Audition 20, which is similar enough to the Peavey Decade everyone likes but it was $25 instead of $250.
Also picked up a Gretsch BST-1000 aka “The Beast”. My wife is a big The Muffs fan and their singer played one, so it’s a gift for her that I can enjoy too. Really interesting guitar…walnut body, bolt on neck, very light weight
And a project Slingerland drum kit that might be more trouble than it’s worth now that I’ve dug in deeper…especially since I sold off all my parts!

The auditronics EQ is awesome. I sit behind a 26 channel 501 most days and the rack EQ just has a little something that the console doesn't. It sounds "the same" but the extreme high and low stuff feels nicer with the PEQ-82. maybe its the unbranded transformers vs the console jensens (or transformerless depending on which in/out). I can't say for sure but the rack EQ works better on more stuff than the console does.
Love those old gretsch BSTs. Killer guitars!

Finally upgraded from my 2014 MBP 15" running Catalina to a 2021 MBP 16" M1 Pro running Ventura. Waited for all the Plugin Alliance AAX DSP plug-ins to get ported over to Silicon and just updated to the iZotope MPS 6 bundle, which has a couple components that won't install to Catalina, it was time. Looking forward to testing it out with the new twin Carbon interface rig.

I picked up an AKG D12E at a fairly decent price. I’ve probably owned half a dozen of these…always end up trading them for something else but occasionally I get the “you got a D12?” question
