While he may hang 50 mikes, he probably only uses a tiny number in a mix. It saves hours of experimenting with placement. Depends. He actually had 70 for the Utah Symphony recording of the Mahler 8 this past spring (5.1 surround). It was in the Mormon Tabernacle, which is horrible acoustically. You really don't want much of that room in the mix. Of course most mics are spots so they'll just come up a bit when detail is needed. I did pick up one rather neat trick. For some of the spots, he placed both an omni and a figure-8. As you know, you can derive any first-order pattern from your combination of the pair. This gave him some options when he got back in studio. I've been wanting to try that, but the opportunity hasn't come up.

Both Zen Pro Audio and Sweetwater are doing a two for one DBX 560A special right now, $200 for two compressors! I think I'm about to get back on the dbx train. Hopefully this time not sell them.

Drums, of course! Cool red sparkle Ludwig 20/13/16 with 5.5" matching snare. Needs a few little things but it's going to clean up nicely.
Also, a Purple Audio Sweet 10 rack.
Trying to track down a combo organ, I missed out on a Farfisa here in town...sort of my fault I went and looked at it with cash in hand, dude didn't have a part he said he had, never found the part and never got back to me until he sold it without that volume pedal to someone else. So, if anyone in Nashville has a lead on a Farfisa Compact or Vox Jaguar or Continental at a fair price (I'm not looking for a restored showroom condition piece) let me know!

Aside from the plugins I make, I'm still as active doing recordings as time allows. And as a classical guy, I'm very much in the minority here. So the mics I lust after will likely be very different from the mics many of you know. Take that as an appropriate caution. I added a pair of Schoeps MK2 capsules (CMC6 bodies) to my kit this summer. For those that don't know them, these are omnis and are perhaps the flattest and quietest mics I've ever used. Studio mics are often 'character' mics of one sort or other--and they have to be. You've got to reduce that rattle in a singer's throat. Or there's that guitar cab pushing 120dB that destroys any mic you put in front of it. But sometimes you want a mic that doesn't seem to be there at all--something that provides a true and faithful account of what happened in the room. Man oh man, but those Schoeps really do it! I just need a few more. Then I'll stop. I promise ;-) I really like the sound of the MK22 open cardioid capsules. My favorite classical recordings are the ORTF with Martinon. And everyone's favorite Decca Tree plus outriggers and a few choice woodwind, brass and soloist spots, Kingsway Hall with Klemperer being a good example. Generally not a fan of really multimiked classical recordings, but sometimes the intensity works, like on Karajan's '76 Bruckner 9. Not a fan of Mahler 8 either, ha.

I just ordered two more Seventh Circle Audio J99 preamps (Jensen/John Hardy Twin Servo style) and two pairs of Sonic Imagery 990 discrete op amps. I recorded a dobro the other day with a KM84 about two feet back through a J99 (no EQ or compression) and I had forgotten just how good these things are. They excel at distant micing and as you move the mic further back and crank the gain up the soundstage just gets bigger and more 3D. We already have two J99's but I decide two wasn't enough. If all you had were KM84's and Twin Servo pre's you could record just about anything and never lose a minutes sleep worrying about the sound.

Most recent change, walked by an Ultrawide LG monitor at Costco and realized how far behind the times my 17" was, what a difference! Also ordered the dbx 560A pair for 2 bills to fill the empty slots on the Aphex.

Finally. I had bought a made in Japan 1989 Blade RH4 that had a perfect neck (oh, such a sweet neck) and body, like it never was really played much, but for some odd reason was cherry picked for the pickups with the humbucker missing in action, all what was left of the cool and innovative spring string tree was a hole in the headstock, the mirrored pickguard replaced and the wiring was all discombobulated. I took her to my tech guy who who inherited Gary Levinson's old shop, where he originally put together his guitars before he had them completely fabricated and assembled in Japan. Philip and Mark matched the brass knobs so it looked balanced and correct, installed original pickups and the mirrored pick guard, dressed the frets and set her up wonderfully and just how I like it. The guitar now...is freaking awesome. The swamp ash body is of course heavy, but the instrument is so well balanced that it almost defies gravity while sitting on my shoulder. And the sound, well, just magnificent coming through the Vox AC15 C1 that I scored for stupid cheap. I named her Xanthe Savita, a combination of Greek and Hindi which translates to "Golden Yellow Sun" to reflect her beauty, her's the color of liquid ambered honey. This is one sexy guitar and I only hope that I can do her justice by playing her as well as she deserves. I couldn't be happier.

It is also incredibly versatile because it has an active eq system that let's you dial in pretty much whatever you need to hear. Combine that with the H/S/S pickup setup with a push pull for the humbucker and your good to go. That Falcon Tremolo system that let's the guitar stay in tune even if you bust a string doesn't hurt the cause either and is second only to the Trans Trem of my mid 80's Steinberger (which needs some very expensive repair atm). I think it was 5 bills that I paid for the guitar and 5 more the great work to bring her back. I am one lucky dude.

After a couple of months of head scratching and much research I just bought a RME ADI-648 MKII MADI< >ADAT interface from eBay to replace our Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe ADAT to FireWire 400 interface. We use the Presonus to connect the ADAT ports of our pair of modified Alesis HD24XR's (used as standalone AD/DA's) via a FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter cable to our late 2013 iMac. It recently replaced our 2008 iMac which was fitted with FireWire. The Presonus was discontinued some years back and although Presonus is still supporting the Firestudio it has become rather flaky since Yosemite and I sense its days are numbered especially with what appears to be in the pipline with the next OS from Apple. I have noticed quite a few forum enquires regarding ADAT to USB interfaces with decent track counts (24 or more) but there's not much available and it appears unlikely that any manufacturers will produce any new such devices now that ADAT is fading into the distance. The RME will allow 64 channels of I/O @ 48khz or 32 channels @ 96khz which means we can now utilise all 48 tracks @ 48khz or 24 tracks @ 96khz. The RME is also a standalone device so it won't be made obsolete any time soon by lack of driver support. The RME will still require a USB to MADI interface to connect it to our iMac but I will wait until I can find one for a decent price otherwise it's likely a USB 3.0 version will appear fairly soon which we may look instead of the current USB 2.0 version. I'm trying to keep our setup as obsolete proof as possible as I have an adversion to having my gear made redundant by 'men in suits'. MADI looks like it will be around for a while at least with plenty of digital consoles and Protools adopting it over the last few years. I jumped on the RME at $1400 AUD shipped to Australia as they are almost $4000 AUD here new!

Farfisa! Bought it cheap because "only the bass key work" but it turns out that the 1/4" had just been spliced off, replaced it and it works. Still needs clean up but I'm excited to finally have one!

I just bought an Aston Origin mic last Saturday. Initial recordings of acoustic guitar and vocals are great. Warm and present. Vocal needs a bit of mid boost at mix time to bring it forward .. but overall very pleased.

I just yesterday bought a Schlagwerk RTS 41, a nice 16 inch frame drum as added flavor to use in a collaboration in which we will be using lots of hand drums. I always enjoy listening to as well as watching people play these wonderful instruments, and I will now have the opportunity to put in some time into exploring the sounds that I can coax out of this nice percussion instrument, as well as being able to tap into newfound inspiration that only a new toy as this can afford, to lay down some new groovy grooves that I would never have come up without. I also have never in my memory ever recorded a frame drum, so this too will be fun to see what I can come up with in the way of microphone choice and placement. It's gonna be great and I can't wait to begin.

I cant remember when I last replied to this list but I just paid for my second SAMAR microphone, so thats on the way... plus some K&M Mic stands. $2200 worth of heavy rubber for floor isolation in the new studio, $1900 in hardwood, not to mention about $1000 in ply and $400 in strapping this week... plus $500 worth of paint for the clapboard (heritage laws, had to match the farmhouse I bought)... but none of that's gear. But hey, at least the mic and stands count!
