Meh. All awards are like this, essentially it's just the industry patting itself on the back. Awards are simply marketing tools. If a device is good, then the user will know and appreciate it.. They need no award in a glass case somewhere to give validity to their choice. If they need validation that their gear is good, then they're relying on hope rather than their ears.

Like most Awards it's like voting for prom queen and king, a good old fashion popularity contest! All you got to do is look purrdy !

The point is.... the TEC award was given to a broken product, that's pretty bad no?

The TEC awards were garbage from when Mix first introduced them. Most reviews seem to be either advertising fodder or buyer self-confirmation, but the Mix reviews were even more meaningless than most.

The article about external vs. internal clocking is interesting, though. I don't think it will change or open the minds of those with religious fervor on either side, but it's quite a different take than usual.

There was a time when reviews from Mix, Sound on Sound and then Tape Op were what we relied on.
What do we do in this Brave New World??

There was a time when reviews from Mix, Sound on Sound and then Tape Op were what we relied on. What do we do in this Brave New World?? I always read the magazine reviews and still do, but obviously large grains of salt are mandatory. These days, I put put more credence in what a lot of people at RGO say. Guys who bring obvious passion to their musical work or hobby, guys like cowboycoalminer, johnkenn, tonycamphd, svart, kcatthedog, mjb, ericn, jcoutu1, smallbutfine, wiz, henge, popmann, randge, olhsson, drbill, levon, etc., etc. etc. Even you! I'm starting to worry that I'm agreeing with you too often. I don't always agree with what all of the above say, but I can be pretty sure they're not just spouting misinformation to make themselves feel good. There's some good guys at GS as well, and some good guys at other forums. If I'm investigating a piece of equipment or a technique, if I find more-or-less similar views among several people that I trust at several different sites, that gives me some confidence that they're probably not too far off the mark. So far I've been very lucky over the years, and haven't been misled.

The TEC awards were garbage from when Mix first introduced them. Most reviews seem to be either advertising fodder or buyer self-confirmation, but the Mix reviews were even more meaningless than most. It's sort of sad. Magazines used to make their bread and butter money from their classifieds in the back. From that, they could run the store and pay writers (like myself) to do a decent review. The Internet put an end to the profit in classifieds and jobs for independent writers. I had one PR Marketing friend tell me that they are told to just send something in and they'll tweak it and publish it. OTOH, online 'reviews" are frequently infiltrated by folks who don't know what they're talking about, or are posting bombs for the competition, or raves for the mfgr. It's getting increasingly hard to tell if ANYTHING you read is on the level. Regards, Ty Ford

TEC awards are kick-backs to the largest advertizers in Mix magazine. It's always been that way. Good luck getting an honest review these days as well.
I used to write for the defunk REP magazine 20+ years ago. I did product reviews for them. I wrote a comprehensive 3 part review, description, tests results and opinions. I used an Audio Precision analyzer for the tests and those were re-printed in the reviews with detailed descriptions of the sets up and results. Readers could form their own opinions because all the data was laid out for them, no mysteries.
Yes, that did ruffle a few feathers in the biz, but the editors stood behind me because I was honest and had the readership's interests in mind rather than the ad revenue for the magazine.
Those days are now long gone so you're all on your own now.
Modern reviews are also 3 parts, I used it, I liked it, go buy it.
