I am in the process of re doing my studio...
I am toying with the idea of using a big old clunky chunky dining table and building racks to go next, on ...maybe under.
One of the biggest hurdles, is cable management.
Anyone doing just this... how did you get around the cable management?
I will have a 24 X 4 X 2 console (38" wide) on my left sitting on two 11 space rack units, I have already built
There will be lots of cables running to and from it.
I also have about 32 RU of gear...
I should add.. my set up sits a couple of meters back from a wall, and I record vocal and acoustic stuff, between it and the wall, sounds good there...
So I kinda wanna hide stuff...
I have currently, a gobo behind the desk, that hides everything, and functions pretty well...
looking for left of centre inspiration
Any doing, done this? Got pictures?
cheers

Think that you need to be able to walk around behind it, and not see a rats nest

looking for left of centre inspiration cheers Wiz When I decided not to put my console into the new CRM due to mostly workflow considerations and acoustics (difficult decision) I needed some inspiration as well. This gave it to me, and while expensive, it was well worth it IMO. Excellent acoustics and keeping to the RF zone, rats nest control, Outboard at my fingertips (main reason) and ergonomics.

I have a similar desk without the middle bay. It is wonderful to have those bays from a workflow perspective. I can get easily to all my hardware. I do wonder though how the alleyway between the bays affects the sound from my speakers which are off the desk and behind the bays. Any thoughts drbill? You have three alleyways. Does sound get funneled in them and distort the image? Just asking.

I believe Wiz lives in Australia, so shipping those Sterling Modular desks from PA, USA is probably not an option. Wiz, i'm gonna suggest you grab Google Sketchup and start designing!

Yeah, I checked out Sterling.. and Argosy.. man.. the price here... out of the question. Whilst , I would love either of those setups, I am just not prepared to pay what would end up being way more than Bricasti Money for them.... but as I said, they look great. I pretty much have the designing of the setup done... its more handy ideas for cable management stuff... here is one another guy on a forum pointed me to...cool There is an Oz supplier too... 8) lots of product there I can either buy, or use as inspiration for DIY cabling

That said, ALL hardware in a room affects the sonics. When I removed the console from my previous CRM, I almost fell over in disbelief after having a console in the room for 20 years. The sound was phenomenally more focused and detailed. Consoles are the greatest for functionality, and the worst for acoustics. Sterling has put a lot of thought and design into these, and I've seen them in a lot of mastering rooms. My speakers will be on stands behind the desk and in front of a highly treated front wall, so I"m hoping for the best. One thing is for sure, I will be better than a console with speakers on the meter bridge which is what I had before.....

I always try to put some of those picture haner hardware with 2 screw holes and a small loop on the back of racks and studio desk so I can loop wire ties through them. easy and easy to modify!
