I got a pair of Golden Age Comp 54s
The HPF on the sidechain, works (I use that term loosely) in a weird fashion, as In I reckon its got a design issue maybe...
Cant find JACK on the web of anyone talking about it..... 8|
So, anyone got one.. ?
Heres what happens basically... (both units, both units are NOS)
Compressing away, happily, with Side Chain set to OFF.
Set it to 50Hz, no compression happens
Set it to 100Hz, compression happens...
but it acts weird when you start pushing things etc
bizarre thing...
I cracked them open, looking for buggered cap etc.. all looks good..
me reckon him got design issue.
lets see
cheers

I have found, after some interaction, some investigation, some trial and error, some evaluation, some comparison and some contemplating...
That Golden Age is pure bollocks. You know who the real unsigned hero is in the pro audio world??? Aphex's Tube-Essence series. Holy crappolini... the preamp 107, the EQ and the 5xx/6xx compressors are all worth their weight in silver (not gold, I'm not crazy). And 100x the value of all those Chinese assembled knockoffs with incredible shortcomings.

I don't want to but i kinda have to somewhat disagree with you. My response is two fold though. The gap is a weird box in it that it is very sensitive to certain frequencies and therefore unpredictable and in our world (audio recording) unpredictable = not good. But... i have found that it is a great box for acoustic guitars albeit not all the time (because it's unpredictable) Enough times it has done "it" where other comps couldn't. And so i keep it. I heard one with carnhills and i must say it made a difference. Now the aphex i played with as well. I changed the tubes but its a starved plate design; in other words the tube hardly does anything. Inside its all wimas but ill take a real tube preamp any day of the week and twice on Sundays. it honestly just took up rack space.

I had a COMP-54 for awhile. I really liked it. For me, the sidechain worked as far as letting more low end through/not triggering but the 7k setting (or whatever it is that's supposed to kind of act as a de-esser) never worked that well. You had to push a crapload of signal into it to even get it to respond. I did like the character of the compression though quite a bit.
FWIW I also had a pair of GAP Pre73s for some time. They were relatively cool, but not in the same league as the Heritage DMA73 I replaced them with. Good vibe for the money though.
I also just ordered the GAP LA3a. I love that lock down LA3a compression so I'm keen to hear what this thing sounds like.

I have a a pair of comp 54's. I modded them with Cranhills a few years back. They made a nice improvement. If I did it again I would use my Neve outputs I just added to the store (http://collectivecases.com/?product=p-t1066l-output-transformer). I tried my P=T1066L in mine to just to compare to the Carnhill and they sound great. The testing got me thinking about digging in to the Comp 54 deeper for mods/improvements. I am sure some stuff could be improved. Maybe at some point I will look into it or I will just consider the AML neve comp.
The crappy tx's that come in The Comp 54 are seriously awful. The output transformers I had feel apart when swapping the transformers. I have never seen a transformer so cheaply built.

You don't happen to know anything about its transformers do you? I'll of course listen to it first but I'd be interested in upgrade opinions.

They seem to work fine. I never use it as a de esser in the 7k mode. So yours don't behave like mine? wiz, mine seems to behave properly. Mine compresses in all modes. You have to re adjust the threshold depending on the material with each HPF. I wonder if maybe something came undone in yours? Does it not compress at all with the HPF set to 50hz? Maybe send a huge amount of signal to it from a kick drum and see if it works at all. Do you have any Deoxit contact cleaner? It may be worth it to spray a little of that one your switches? ragan, I don't know about them. I would be shocked if they aren't just as bad. That is the only way they can sell these things so cheap. The transformers in them probably cost a buck to make.

Thanks for getting back to me on that. it means there is an issue with the pair I have here. i cracked the top of one of them, when I first noticed this and looked at the cap for the 50hz , seemed okay... Will investigate further... thanks cheers wiz
