Just want to take a moment to thank the companies that provide 500 series DIY modules to us all.
I want to especially thank Jeff Steiger from Classic API, Jean-Pierre from Sound Skulptor and Joe Malone from JLM for projects that I've completed - for their support and help.
I was around at a friends last night whilst they were rehearsing and set up a SM7b > Sound Skulptor MP573 > JLM LA500 for vox and a Rode NT1 > VP28 for guitar cab. Set up a couple of camera and recorded it. Youtube attached. :-)
Just thinking it would be great if others had videos / tracks they've recorded with DIY gear could post their examples here too?

Hey Tony - thanks. I know it's not the most polished performance - but worth posting anyway I think.
In the lunchbox I've got: 2 x VP28 1 x Sound Skulptor MP573 1 x JLMLA500 1 x Buzz Elixr - I swapped for a VP28
In the rack case 1 x API MPAII 1 x Focusrite Green Voice channel 1 x FF800
Hope to do some more recording over the next couple of weeks with the 500 stuff. I'll post the clips up when I do.

Before I clicked on the video I saw the SM7 and you look like a singer for a Modern Hardcore band , so I as expecting some heavy aggressive music . The sound quality is really good , you have a nice setup .

Hi Guys - Thanks for your great comments. In reality my mixing skills are developing and my high end hearing loss in one ear is not great.. But I'm getting there! :-)
Rob's on guitar and Angelo on vocals in this one.
I'm starting a project in my area to help promote all the local musicians by having them over at this location and doing 2 or 3 tracks and setting up a website to promote them. Nothing financial - just wanted to do something to help promote the area and the artists. Hopefully got a couple of more lined up next week. I stumbled across the Music Fog channel on Youtube a while back and it inspired me. I can't promise to feature the same calibre of musicians - I just love recording and filming live and capturing the imperfections and emotions of it all.
I'm in the middle of modding a Studio Projects T3 with a RK12 capsule and T14 transformer - so the SM7 came out today. I'm always pleasantly surprised how much I like dynamics on vocals. I've just ordered a Beyer M201 to try out.
I'n not sure I get the whole thrash metal stuff - but each to their own.
Just came over here from Gearslutz and might hang out here instead.
My background is in web / media / video production, I create a few iOS apps and have written some guided meditation apps and CD Baby stuff but are trying to make some more space in my life for music... difficult at times.
Thanks again. Craig

Sorry jcoutu1 - forget to mention.
I live about an hour north of Auckland, New Zealand. Originally from the UK. So featuring local artists from around Warkworth / Matakana etc.
Did a short stint at the BBC after leaving college in sound design, then got into web and media production and been doing that ever since.
Moved out to NZ around 5 years ago because the pace / lifestyle in the UK was getting ridiculous unless you worked your ass off, and we had a child and decided to change direction a little.

I know...I was expecting some death metal... Sounds great! Thanks John. Nice to get some positive feedback while I'm improving my skills. Funny the preconceptions a SM7 can bring to mind isn't it! I did a search on YouTube ages ago and I think everything I saw was death metal on the first page.... I have fond memories of M201's at the BBC and have always had a soft spot for a good dynamic mic.

New Zealand ??!! You mean Middle-earth ! You need to record and represent with some local hobbit tunes .

One can never have enough M201's. I like them really, they are small and you can pretty much put them in front of everything from bass to guitars, vocals, drums, whatever and it sounds pretty good. Great versatile mics, esp. considering the pricing... I heard the newer ones have lower output, but sound pretty much the same than the older ones i have...

For sure - I think they are an underrated mic for sure. The only thing I'm missing from my mics really are a couple of ribbons now I guess.

I actually mic'd an upright piano with a pair of these 201's last night at a live performance. Worked nicely.

Almost impossible for them to sound bad on most things. Just need to decided on some ribbons - might look at some Fatheads.

Another video with VOX using a Studio Projects T3 modded with a RK12 capsule and a T14 transformer > Sound Skulptor MP573 > JLM LA500. Guitar from NT2 > Classic API VP28.
I am over the moon with the RK12 and T14 in the T3 - it's transformed it from a sibilant pain at times into silky smooth and mellow. A little compression and EQ and verb added in Logic.
It's a video for a new website that I'm launching in February, but no harm with a quick peek. Please could you not share it around too much until then outside of this forum :-) Thanks.

real nice stuff, nothing hotter than a guitar with a pretty girl behind it, especially when she's got the goods! Suggestion if you're interested, guitar a little too back maybe? or maybe put a gentle mid presence bump on it? Compared to her voice, it sounded almost like the guitar mic was off, or in a different room to me.
good job

Hey Tony - thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to do the final mix on these in a couple of weeks - I'll try that out. Building my skills slowly, so all input is greatly appreciated.
