Anyone using exciters when mixing? I have the Waves Ren Bass, which is pretty cool, but am considering getting something with knobs. The Aphex Exciter seems like it could be cool for kick and snare. Anyone using these or are they just silly? www.aphex.com/products/exciter/

if you want to use it on drums, I'd point you towards the BBE sonic maximizer. It puts a nice thump on the LF if desired. The is one model that is better than the others, but I honestly can't remember which one. It's been years since using them. They seem to go in the opposite direction of where I want to go with Digital....

Oh the distortion boxes, I can never remember if Aphex is odd or Even. The Aphex with big bottom bass synth is fun for adding lowed and gives you both the Aohex and the BBE sound. I never found them exciting, I have found the distortion works once in a while but never had the erdge to splurge, honestly I would probably grab the plugin for the money instead!
In the intrest of transparency While at full Compass our sister Company Intelix was the first to license the Aphex circuit , we sold both.

I used to own an Aphex....rarely used the big bottom bit....and always from/to tape. Then for years I used a little ART DIO that have a "tube warmth" knob that did the same type distortion at a fixed frequency--a little higher than Aphex.....lower than BBE.
Waves has a model of the old Aphex units. I demo'd it--sounded just like I remember them. Cool on things where distortion is a better call than EQ for adding precense--bass guitar and snare drum--or if someone sent a particularly clean high hat--screw that, hats need a little grunge for me. One of the issues with a lot of sample libraries (IMO) is that they record the hat in isolation with a really nice clean SDC--both a perfect sounding "this is what the hat sounds like"--and not "the sound" you've ever heard on records because no one was recording hats without some bleed into the other mics of the kit. So, realistic ends up equating to "less good recording". Anyway--I didn't buy the Waves, because that's really a niche thing--and both bass and snare, for me can use a lot more outright obvious distortion I can get elsewhere.

Well, I grabbed an Aphex 204. $120, I figured the best way to find out is to try.

I occasionally like to use the Waves Aphex Exciter on a send and it comes in handy on certain sources to add a little "excitement" and sparkle. I've never owned an external unit. The SPL exciter/stereo width plugin/hardware looks useful too
I used the Precision Hz thing from UAD for the first time yesterday on a crappy sounding bass drum and it did a nice job of adding a low fundamental...I like that it has a "Q" adjustment. The Lowender plug in is pretty cool too I've used that for a couple years. I think it's modeled after the old DBX boom box.

I remember when The Eagles put on their album cover "not mixed with Aphex Aural Exciter". It would be kind of cool if a band or major artist did something like that with Auto Tune.
