Don't forget to tune in or set your DVR's for Chris Stapleton as the musical guest on SNL this weekend. Hippie rock star producer Dave Cobb will be playing guitar with the band. Hopefully we'll be seeing these guys get some Grammy's in a few weeks!!

Agreed but I think for the past 25 years the biggest problem of SNL has been that they take a skit that's funny and don't know when to cut or edit it, if most of there skits were half as long and lost the filler they would be funny!

I caught the first song. Sounded great. Was that the Dylan model J-200 Cobb was playing?
Whew...SNL is seriously unfunny these days.

Need to rewatch it tonight. I thought the vocal was mixed too low. I know the song but thought it might have been hard for someone who didn't to understand all the lyrics. Cobb owned it though!!

I just watched the Chris Stapleton SNL clips. He had Mickey Raphael playing harp with him. Mickey played on a BOC song called Dr. Music in the 80's. He also jammed with us live once at a gig in Albany NY. Mickey's a great guy and great player, his main gig is Willy Nelson.

Yeah the vocal was a bit berried, but live broadcasts are a bitch, your FOH is still going to do FOH, so some guy who has only mixed you in sound check is mixing you for millions really for the first time . most broadcast guys don't spend enough time getting dynamics under control or grouping and if the guitarist is a little hot all they will do is grab a fader, but if they like the tone..

Some words in the vocal got lost, Chris seemed to be singing across the mic, when he was looking left, the level sometimes dropped.
I don't think he was using in-ears. Since I began using them a few years ago, I'm VERY conscious of level, proximity, everything I'm giving to the FOH. If my vocal level is spotty, it's my fault, and not because I'm unaware of what's going out the mic wire, 'cause I hear it.

You are right donr. I wonder if he doesn't like using in-ears. I know some singers who have a performance style that is so much about vocal tone and vibe (often songwriters) that they notice they sing differently with in ears and don't give quite the same performance. Not sure if any of us listeners ever notice that stuff, but every artist is different as to how they get into their zone.

I blow out my voice easily, get a head-ache from them too. It's like singing in a vacuum, even with artificial reverb added. Just give me a pair of wedges and 800 watts of power fully cranked and I'm good to go. LOL

...Chris seemed to be singing across the mic, when he was looking left, the level sometimes dropped... I've noticed that he seems to face his wife while preforming, which is cool.
