I have to accept that i'm not going to be able to afford harrison type outboard HP/LP filters right now, i have the waves, i was wondering if anyone has both, and if you could make a recommendation? I like the pro Q screen interface, I will be using it primarily for hp/lp phase accurate filtering.
thanx for any info T

You can pretty much do anything you want with pro q. As for how it sounds compared to other eq's? Well, I couldn't tell much of a difference between a hardware Helios and the plug. So my opinion shouldn't count for much.

I saw some null test where a guy was able to define the parameters for the default EQs in Logic/Protools/Cubase/etc such that they nulled out against the Waves API/Neve eq's. I'll try to find it. it was enlightening, to say the least.

I've read that before as "do all eq plugs sound the same?" Think I started the thread on GS. I know there are some things that I do with a 1073 on snare that I'm sure would be easy to replicate on any eq, but I have no idea what the eq curves look like...I just know I like the way it sounds when you attack a snare with a 1073. Kind of a ease of use thing...

Yup, that's the premise he's trying to convey. they all do the same thing, some of 'em just get you there easier, some of 'em get you there cheaper but take longer..

thanx for the link chuck! to me, i want to impart a phase smear when i want it, unless i'm getting vibe from a hp/lp filter like the harrison stuff, i want accurate. Those sweeps you ran for me chuck, the lc53's were amazingly stable phase wise, but still sweet. The 1073 just sounded nasaly and weird to me, i like the pre section of the 1073 a lot though..so?

i skimmed the page and may have missed it, but is he suggesting that a linear phase eq, nulls with a non phase correcting eq?

i skimmed the page and may have missed it, but is he suggesting that a linear phase eq, nulls with a non phase correcting eq? Well if he is, he's wrong. Time domain artifacts from the FFT process required for Linear Phase EQ'ing means its artifacts are inherently different. If you consider phase shift an artifact at all. Of all the crazy BS I heard on Gearslutz that I never thought would work, parallel EQ'ing actually does sound different. I'd often wonder, in the fancy EQ's, is that a part of it. Using the phase shift around the "bell" to to tuck in a little around a boost or vica versa?

I just posted about the new Fab Filter MB. These guys know how to do DSP right. Everything is so easy and intuitive. And even though I love good hardware, there is so much more we can do with these great plugins that can't be achieved otherwise.

I haven't seen this vid, but the other fab filter ones that I've seen are great. They do a fantastic job with this stuff. They offer an education discount too I think, fyi.

I use the Waves Linear Phase LOW BAND....all day. In "low ripple" mode--nothing comes close for HPF'ing ITB. I don't like the FabFilter in direct comparison. But, for the Braodband, I can go either way (and don't use either much unless overheads need work)--there's something extra wonderful about the HPFs in the LOW band in low ripple mode.
Capitals are not yelling, FWIW--just emphasizing that it's the "other" algorithm that comes with their EQ. To be clear.
