Markets getting a little saturated.... Still thinking I'll go the VTM route This. I'm a bit miffed that Abbey Road abandons its own plugins and suddenly Abbey Road gear turns up all over the place. I got VTM and UAD Studer, I also got my PR99, so I guess I'm set. Not a big fan of Waves anyway...

Personally I've never found a use for tape sims!! I'm always satisfied with the SoundToys offerings for saturation etc. Tried VTM and it didn't really do it for me...

I actually returned VTM, at the time I got it, it was too buggy, causing iLok lockouts. I also have Slates FG-X and am using the VBC demo now. Slate has been extremely tardy catching up to the general move to 64 bits. I can't use it in Logic X. When I tried the VTM, it seemed like a great deal, with both multi track and stereo tape sims for less than one UAD plug. Unfortunately, despite the hype, I felt it just didn't sound that great. It's been a while, but if memory serves, it was just wasn't clean enough for my tastes. When I got the UAD ATR-102 shortly after, it was so much cleaner, more like the real thing, in fact, better than the real thing for me, because with the presets, I could try various calibrations easily, and often, one of the presets fit so well, the tracks came to life.

I've got a teac 2 track 1/4" reel to reel i got for free, it sounds killer with all the hiss, wobble, flutter. Drag a finger on the feed reel and coolness occurs. also, wicked tape stop.
OT i know, but a lot of times you can get these for cheaper than the plug? that's why i mentioned it
good luck T

Yeah, the analog saturation thing is so important to mixing ITB...but such a crowded market. I find tape sims....well--all of them but VTM have simply been distortion boxes. Useful....but, now that there are such NICE flexible circuit distortion emulations like VCC and NLS...and less "emulation" things like Fab Filter's multiband Saturn, which allos things like just saturating the midrange, while leaving the highs and lows pristine....I don't see me buying ANOTHER tape emu in software. Now, if one were to build a converter with it built into it...that might get my attention.
But, who knows--I'll download the demo next time I'm in "geek out" mode. Maybe it will be like MPX was--a must have for a single use. I bought it just for snare. I use it here and there on other things....but, it LIVES on the snare....worth the asking price simply for the one job.

I agree on mpx on snare. Love the drive knob on snare.
