Well, what I'm asking is, if you had to choose one, would you choose a Retro Instruments Stereo EQ or a RI Sta/176? Just daydreaming here in my season of economic despair and the thought of adding a big, thick transformered EQ wouldn't give that sta thickness and then the ability to really sweeten the 2-bus.
Can't have both. This isn't Gearslutz...

no one notices when it's EQ'd, but they notice when it's compressed.

You're out of your mind JK.
Personally, I think you're work sounds great and whatever you're after is likely just a technique or approach thing you need to wrap your head around. However, for three thousand dollars the 176 is brutal expensive. I'll round you up to four thousand and suggest a Portico 5042 and two double wides. You now have a bus compressor and tape saturation for use both in tracking and mixdown. I'd probably run the kick and snare through the tape sat and put each overhead through one of the double wides. At mix I'd use the doublewides on the guitar bus and the tape sat on the mix bus.
My 4k would go a lot further than 3k AND you'd have Retro gear I know you've been sitting in a corner tweaking out over.
Think it over my friend.
Also, if you're really hurting for transformer thickness, try the Rascal Audio Tonebuss. You will like it. If you're still need bus EQ, give the Clariphonic a try. It won't do anything close to what a Pultec, Manley or Retro will but it is a very addictive thing on the mix bus. The VST is $249 and there's a demo.

Really, the retro stuff was just an example of what I was talking about. Just trying to generate conversation. There's no danger in me buying anything in the near future.
Why is it that everyone rakes me over the coals when I talk about wanting gear? "Jeesh, Kennedy, you have a problem..." I just find it humorous.
Oh, and btw, I've owned two Doublewides. Didn't like them at all. Many times you DO get what you pay for.

You could always be a Habs fan and try posting in the hockey thread. How about this? vintageking.com/recording-gear/500-series/rascal-audio-two-v-demo-dealI wish someone other than me could vouch for this company. You could also go with a pair of Fatso's and the 5042 but I think you're getting up there in price.

That's just an impossible question. I don't use any outboard eq or comps any more but if I did it would all be on the master buss, so I'd probably go with a comp if I had to pick one.
