Some of you remember that I was very happy using Magic AB because it keeps me away from trouble when mixing. I now had a longer break from mixing and old habits, for example too much LF, come back. I can hear in ABing that I use too much. I pull the LF back, but in the process of mixing my brain wants more and I cant resist .... crazy.
I am not a native speaker.... I hope you know what I mean?
Do you have or had such bad habits too? And how did you erase them?
Cheers... Holmes.

Do you have a sub? I am a bass freak and getting a sub cured my need to feel the track as I mix.

Along those same lines I actually back off the low end a little extra as well as backing off the FX like you're describing.
I high pass everything in a mix but do it in context with the rest of the instruments playing at the same time. The two exceptions are, of course kick and bass guitar. Usually I'm high passing bass guitar at 40 Hz. and Kick at 30 Hz. by default.
I find that as you high pass the other instruments in context with the others you can generally roll off more low end than you would normally. Increase the high pass filter until you hear it cutting into the track and then back it off just a little so you're not hearing it. This clear out a ton of unneeded low end that makes a mix congested and you can hear your kick and bass clear as day.
I find that I have to work harder on shaping bass and kick tones because they are so much more audible. When these elements are exposed I'll generally have to spend time getting the two tight or the middle of the stereo field sounds amateurish. Hope this helps?

As I wrote in the hpf therad I never hpf anything by default... but I also think its very often a level thing, our hearing system tends to like the LF. Yeah I think I have t recalibrate my brain by listening to more 70 s and 80 s records.
Its strange the music of today has a lot more bases. It seems that influences me too.
Its fascinating that I have to relearn something which I had right in the last project. Never have a longer mixing break Lol...
Its good that I am not a professional AE.

I agree with the sub thing. It would just be an adjustment, but if I didn't have the sub, I would most likely mix bass heavy...

I get angry when I think about removing bass, I NEED DA BASS.
I'm not sure what your monitoring is like. But one of the first things I noticed with high end conversion and amplification was a strong and present bass frequency. The clarity of the low end gives more of a present feeling. My DACs and my power amp both have pretty beefy power supplies.
When I was super hungry for bass though I did hook up a sub for a while.
