An SSD is a good idea. I've got the same mini as an auxiliary computer and just gave it new life with a 1TB SSD. Make sure you get a SATA 6 device and USB3 enclosure for best speed. FWIW I have multiple computers and a mix of thunderbolt and USB3 devices and I've found that USB3 is every bit as fast for drives.

Get the mac mini data doubler kit from macsales.com and put a 2nd SSD in. I did it to mine and it's great to not have to worry about an external drive.

Those 2012 minis are a beauty of engineering, IMO....as a side note. Too bad they decided to not continue that....this whole "non user upgradeable" thing is hardcore shit sandwich for musicians and engineers. Apple always used fairly inferior drives/memory AND charged a premium for them. It was always the wise money to buy the lowest config to get the CPU you need and then pimp out the drives and RAM. Oh well.

The more I start moving big files around, the more I wish I had a bunch of SSD for faster file transfers when moving big folders. That will probably be the next move for me.

I'm loving my Samsung 850 Evo's.
For 500 GB the 850 EVO's turn out to be the better bang for the buck.
For 1 TB the 850 PRO SSD's turn out to be a better value than the 850 EVO's with that amount of drive space.
The 2 TB EVO's turn out to be a better buy than the 2 TB PRO's.
After looking at tech specs for months, these wound up being the best of the block for SATA. Anything smaller isn't worth the money for a serious work station.
The 950 PRO 500 GB M.2 drive is the fastest on the block for an operating system, however I would wait until next year for 1 TB 950 PRO M.2's. The EVO M.2's turn out to be worth skipping as they retain the same speeds as their SATA counterparts, and a lot more drive space can be had for far less with the 850 EVO's.
I'm going to upgrade with two 2 TB EVO's within a year or two unless prices shift in favor of 850 PRO's. However my two 500 GB 850 EVO's have been a huge jump in terms of speed when it comes to work.
There's faster lab worthy SSD's but they cost a fortune, and overall Samsung has the best value going with SSD's...though SanDisk and Crucial are also good brands to consider.

I, too, have a Samsung EVO SSD. It's in an external, 3.0 case. It works great as a write drive with my 2013 i7 mini.
