Very nice - I get it.. But that wasn't one of the choices. Could you listen to the tracks too?
So I tried re-recording the motor boating mics and the problem re-appeared - swap em out other mics and it dissappeared.. Strange thing is I'm pretty sure it's on the same channel = I.e. it's not necessarily the mic, right?

So angry! OK - I voted...I thought 2 had a great image...and liked 4 and 5 too.

Great preamp shoot-out. Could you give us some details? Instrument, mics used? Their setup? And if you are so inclined, PM me the pre amps. I've already voted.

Here's a pic of the set up -- Mics roughly 8-9 inches above between the tuning pegs and the hammers and about 1 foot distant from each other. thanks Rob, I'll PM you with what they are. But I will be posting after I get a few more votes and comments.

I liked 5 and 6, were all these with no sustain pedal?

Looking forward to listening. Probably won't have a chance until tomorrow night or Monday though.

I liked 5 and 6, were all these with no sustain pedal? Nope - lot's 'o sustain pedal. I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that question.. If you listen to some my first attempts to record the thing, the pedal noise is deafening. 5 AND 6, huh? but if you had to pick?.. Come 'on. Put up your vote!

Put up your vote! 6 sounded like it had more sustain I don't doubt that I used the sustain pedal more on that take.. It was one of the last takes - and it's possible I was sub-consciously getting more confident about being able to avoid pedal noise. Ever since I started recording, my pedal technique has changed dramatically. I use to stomp on the thing - and constantly use the soft pedal to move the hammers over to create a different tone. Now, I never touch the soft pedal and the sustain pedal never hits bottom. In fact, now the damper head moves as little as possible - I'm just about at the point where I don't have to think about it any more.

The piano patches in my Casio Privia PX-5S are pretty good and the pedal works well. Just isn't the same though.

I picked 5 here despite the motorboating.

I agree with Kennedy number 2 sounded great, not so close sounding as the others. Sounds ready to sit in a mix.
Love Kawai pianos. Great tone. In between Steinway and Yamaha.

4 for me. Yhe others had some crack up and other issues of proximity and noise. 4 gave the best picture of the piano.

4 for me. Yhe others had some crack up and other issues of proximity and noise. 4 gave the best picture of the piano. Do you think the mics were too close to the piano (8-10")? As I recorded the DAW's meters never hit much more than -10db. When I bounce in Logic, normalize is checked (default). Better that than to let SoundCloud destroy it even more, right? Thanks for the participation so far. I'll post the results tomorrow.. Anyone else want to get in on the game part?

I can't imagine the mics were overloading. Had to either be hitting the DAW too hard or SoundCloud destroying right?

The proximity issues I heard were mics that were too close and sounded closed off or it might be the preamp exhibiting those dark and murky-ier sounds. Dunno which.

I see some proximity issues with this.

Not too "proximate" for my taste.
Will listen tomorrow, gotta run now.

OK - here are the mics..
#1 - 1x 3U GZ47 FET and 1X 3U Warbler MKID
#2 - 2x BeesNeez LuLu Fet
#3 - 2X Rode NT5
#4 - 2x Neuman KM 184
#5 - 1x Oktava MK012 (Russian) + 1x Oktava MC012 (Chinese)
#6 - 2x Shure KSM27
Pre-Amp - 2x Dizengoff D4 - For those interested, I made a hotter recording of the motor-boating for Matt at Dizengoff and very quickly received a prepaid UPS shipping label - The pre is out for repair.
I found the 3U combo too puffy in the mids - a bit too boxy. The KSM27's and NT5's lacked depth in the upper-mids. They just sounded thin.
The KM 184's are perhaps my favorite, being the smoothest and most pleasant to listen to, but I have a feeling the Oktava's might sit more happily in a mix. The Beezneez came in third for me.
When I consider that I recently shot out many of the same pairs using the Focusrite Liquid pres, I get a bit confused because the NT5's were my favorite in that shoot-out.

Wow. Incredible, thanks for the big reveal.
I didn't even know what mics were being tested this was almost maybe a double blind test!

I'd choose 5, I felt it had a balance of proximity and room that was just right. It's colored, but I liked that color. But, that said, this is for listening to a solo piano, for a piano in a mix, 4 might work better. So, I'd compare those two in a few different musical situations and pick the one that suits your needs best.

Seems one of the mics lack more bottom than the other...maybe a lil too pretty on top...perfect midrange. Lacks a lil depth for me but I could see using them in a pinch
