I only recently found out that EZ Drummer has a feature where you can quickly see a drum kit, use a midi keyboard or a mouse to quickly create a beat, quantize it, and use it. Meanwhile, it automatically searches out similar beats, which is brilliant, because the similar beats are usually better than the one you create, and it would save me the excruciating task of searching high and low for different drum patterns. Is this feature also in Superior Drummer 2, and I've just never seen it? If not, can I get it for SD2, or do I have to purchase EZ Drummer to get it? If so, is there a crossgrade price for those who already own SD2?
I just sent this question to Toontracks, but it might take three days to get an answer.

No, it's not in sd2. Yes, you would have to buy ez2 to get it. I've been wondering if they were going to upgrade SD2 for while...they're gonna have to eventually. The stock sounds in EZ2 are pretty good...and then the Muscle Shoals ezx is excellent.

I wish I could just get that one feature, with the drum set that I can make a quick beat, then auto-search for similar beats. It's crazy that SD2 doesn't have that already as an upgrade. It would save me so much time and aggravation.

Isn't EZplayer free for SD users? It's just the beat engine without the shitty sounds. I don't know if they've maintained it--was years ago, but that was their answer for people who bought the better drum sampler, yet needed a drum machine to play the samples.

I can use my midi keyboard to play a simple beat, but it's way more convenient having the mouse to click on the drums, make a simple beat and then have EZ Drummer search out all the similar patterns. It's way more creative that way. I can quickly listen to three or four patterns, then pick and choose right away.
In SD, I have to get to the drum patterns first, click on a tempo, listen to a couple of beats, go back to the tempo/other beats section, do it again and again until one beat is good. That tends to make me compromise and just choose something that works OK. If I could easily try all the related beat patterns available without switching around, I might find some really cool things I'd miss otherwise.

I know the way tap to find works. It would be wonderful if it ever had anything in the library that matched what I played---but, I guess if I would buy it and buy the 900 $30 expansions of kits I'd never want to use, I'd probably have better luck since they all add midi beats--certainly they hired a kindred drummer at SOME point for one of those and didn't quantize their beats. Maybe?
Be warned I have a likely irrational hatred of that app. I find it exemplary of EVERYTHING wrong with where the music market is going. It sounds like ass. It can't follow a tempo map, so it FEELs like crap---but, THEY MADE A GREAT UI....thus....sells millions of copies. I've sequenced drums for 25 years....I'm picky. The tap to find is indeed wonderful, if it has anything to find. I'm sorry to hear they haven't implemented that in EZPlayer.

I didn't know that....I knew you could with XLN....so, that IS what the $30 paks are?
Martin....how are you not happy with LogicX's new drummer? Have you used the "follow" feature? I have done that for 25 years in a kind of manual tempo map way....but, that should really make that powerful. I would love to see how well they implemented that....it would be worth the $200 if it automatically does what I do manually with a manual "click" and hitpoint detection and fine tune with the warp tool in Cubase....I bet you can't use external sounds with it, though. Like Steinberg with Groove Agent--they've likely moved to "acid'ized" hat loops--you can't make a midi hat swing the same. You just can't as an actual recording which can now be bent to fit whatever....

Of course, after you used the Groove Generator, you would have to explain how your drummer had 5 arms.

Very cool, thanks John. That's kind of what Apple tried for in "Drummer", but didn't quite get right because the interface is confusing. If only Apple would do something like this interface it would be cool, because they give you 20 or 30 very usable drum kits. I sent a note to Toontracks, I hope they come up with a way other than for us to buy EZ Drummer to flesh out our Superior Drummer's features.

Martin I feel you buddy. I think whst you are relating is something many of us struggle with. Especially compromising because I just cant spend another 3 hrs listening for that nearly perfect beat. Sd definitely needs more variety. Like Kontakt libraries. I liked Acid. I liked the groove bender thing. But I hated that it was limited to straight beats. No waltz music finding beats there. Considering my band plays and is influenced by Eastern European music of the Roma and such it became unusuable. Still it was super easy and fast to chop up the kits and make them my own. Plus I liked the daw-wave layout. They need to upgrade that too.
