Hi all,
I've been asked to build a GSSL mix bus compressor for a friend and am currently trying to work out which version to source/build.
So far it appears side-chain controls and the Turbo Boost mod is desirable.
Does anyone have any experience with the full GSSL kit from PCB Grinder and/or any other suppliers?
Thanks

Looks like he's already ordered the parts for an SB4000 from Serpent Audio. I guess I'll find out what it's like once I've built it!

Ill answer for the record, even though you have a solution.
I get tons of e-mails...TONS! asking for full kits, and I am not set up to produce cases, so instead of answering a few mails a day on cases, I am now offering them in a somewhat inefficient manner. If nothing else, I figure people can "see" what goes into it more easily, and just get the parts they need.
From my site: You can find most of the things cheaper elsewhere, and I mainly stock these selected parts in small quanteties for the sake of your convenience.
About the mods, having built the various incarnations (including a gold can version), I feel differences are grossly overstated at times. I have mails from people who have the impression that the turbo mod changes it from a mono to a stereo compressor, or separates the side chain into two. The reality is, the summing is done differently which gives a different center image weight, but also a difference width. It is still summed - its a stereo unit...
If you're doing sane amounts of compression, the whole double SC/turbo mod combo is, imo, overkill. If you are doing insane amounts of compression, you may/may not care, since you're going for a sound anyway.
I made a tricked out version. Its called the MS VECA. You can adjust the weight of the M/S into the side chain on that. It also does other stuff...
The Serpent unit is very cool - haven't tried one/built one, but I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

gssl is cool, but isn't the build thread like 1000 pages long? that alone is reason enough to build the SB4000 imo, not to mention Quad vca's and Mikes attention to the details.

This goes for the 70 page SB4000 (started 8 years later than the GssL thread) as well as the 300 page GssL thread. Gustav

Thanks guys,
I'll keep you updated once I start the build. I also have a Neotek Elite to get into shape as well so I have my work cut out!

LOVE the sb4000 I built, although I find myself using it less these days on the 2buss. The VP28s seem to be doing enough compression as it is. Realllly kills on the drum buss though. Can't comment on the gssl, but i've been thinking of making one on the cheap for bkgrd vox/verb processing...
