After a really really long time of working on this project when I could I finally got it finished. If you haven't heard of this one they're kind of tough to get a hold of unless you ask on the black market over on GDIY, but, what it is essentially is a 2 channel version of the UA 176, a Vari-Mu tube based compressor that came before the 1176 and after the 175.
Basically I've found this to be absolutely incredible on bass and vocals. The attack can be limiter fast, but also the release is nice and slow, smooth too. It only takes a few seconds of adjusting the amount of compression and the attack/release to make whatever you want to sit perfect in the mix. What amazes me with the bass though, the lower octaves come through perfectly, no need to use it's LP SC, it grabs those low octaves along with the rest of it and spits out a beautiful balanced and smooth result. Crank it up and it gets ballsy as hell too. Puts the bass right in your face.
On vocals it's the same story, but sounds as creamy as a V76. You could put this behind any preamp and it's going to give you a very controlled, warm and smooth result. Work around with the attack/release and that vocal will sound massive and sit right down.
I originally had Edcors for the input/interstage and outputs, but there was too much hum. I found a slamming deal on some Lundahls and there is almost no noise coming out. It uses 2520 or IC opamps, but a mix of 2520 on the input and 1731 on the output is glorious. I worked a long time on this, building it when I had a free minute or two and also finding the right recipe of transformers and opamps.
If you're looking for something like that and are advanced in building this is one to hunt down. I wouldn't suggest this to anyone beginning or probably even a moderate... pretty complex build but very rewarding. If anyone is looking for bass and vocal comp I wanted to give my thoughts for you guys, this one is a homerun for the price per channel. If you got a really good set of matched tubes this on the buss would be instant glue, also would add a large presence. Really great build.
