So walk me through this... cowboycoalminer ericn svart you guys have been to my house, so maybe you could comment. I'm thinking I might put a speaker on the ledge of that second floor half wall and point out to the big room. Then have two mics outside of my little studio to pick up the results. Couple of questions. Do I need two speakers sending out a stereo signal or can I just shoot it out in mono and record it in stereo. Also, is a spaced pair of mics the best solution or maybe a mid side arrangement? I'm interested to see if this will even be worth the trouble.

As far as positioning, I'd put the speaker on the ledge, the mic in the middle of the room below, away from reflection points. You can turn the mic all different directions to get the general sound you want. It's a quick and easy test to see if it'll even be something you like..
As far as stereo vs. mono, that's a matter of taste. I'd probably do mono per track and maybe move the mic around a bit for each track just to give it a slightly different sonic signature.
In your house, with all the carpet, I'd think this would result in more of an ambiance type of sound, rather than reverb.

Could I put the mics right outside my studio behind the speaker? Might be a really big predelay. But it would be a lot easier to set up.

John I'd say set it up as quick and dirty as possible just to hear if it's even worth the trouble . You can always tweak it later. MISTER MICROPHONE, I mean Tim pretty much said what I wanted to say, I'll add in the end you have to balance sound quality ease of use and wife won't kill me so star easy and see if it's worth investigating further before putting to much thought, as play with a it of predelay !
