I need more spaces again. The Lindell 510, 10 slot is currently on sale for 4 bones, brand new. Can't do much better than that. Anyone used the 510 or 506?
Am I better off getting a used Radial or API or something else? Cost is a concern. Rack mountability would be nice, but could probably make due without.

Best bang for buck in my opinion is the Capi kit........ ends up being $45 per slot if you build two 11 space racks. Of course, you have to build it, but nothing too difficult there. A couple big benefits to the CAPI kit...... all neutrik connectors, and a separate dedicated power supply, which is really easy to open up if you need to service it down the road (haven't with mine). Having a separate power supply ensures you won't have any noise issues, which is definitely a problem with some of the cheaply made units. It also has nice edge connectors, and it's easy to insert/remove modules. On the lindell I had, the connectors were too tight and I was always afraid it was going to break or eat the gold off the card edge.

The high voltage combined with my questionable soldering skills (questions like "which end of the soldering iron do I grab? The hot one?") makes it seem like a bad idea for me You do have to build the PSU.... and if you've never soldered, or only soldered cables, it might not be a good first project. But I would think if you've built one of Jeff's preamps (or SCA or whatever), you shouldn't have a problem with the PSU..... just take your time, and follow the instructions.

i had a 506 and i got transformer interference on the last two slots. sold it and bought a radial. the radial is awesome. you can chain them together without cables. has sidechain inputs and two inputs on the front for easy access. honestly not even comparable.
all that being said i would go the capi route. you can build 2 units (22 slots) with one power supply and you could sell the racks you have now to cover some of the cost.

Ohh yeah, the CAPI is out for me. I can't throw down $1000 right now and don't have the free time to DIY.

I'm using the Fredenstein 10 with no issues. I also have the 506. I have had a few weird things that came and went with that but for the most part it has been functioning.

How many slots do you want?
Capi is roughly $750 for 11, add $350 and get 22 slots. Not a bad deal if you look at the long term investment.

I currently have a 506. No issues. I'm replacing it with a Bento 10. I have both in house right now. The Bento is very well built. Ignore the Fredness.

Jeff kit is the way to go.... you can get a 51x rack and have the best of both worlds. If you can't swing the PSU build your own or find a donor and rig it up with the XLR style connector Jeff uses. I'm going to get 1 or 2 next project from him.

Have a full Fredenstein Bento 10 for almost two years, runs great without any issues. It is actually cheaper than the 51x DIY route, at least in Europe. I´m a huge DIY enthusiast, put together the all my pre´s, comp´s, EQ´s (kits from CAPI, AML, Sound Skulptor) but the Bento is a no brainer...

Never had a minutes trouble with it. Use all six slots fine. Might have a good unit though sounds like.

Talk about kicking yourself? When Sweetwater put those Aphex USB 500 racks on clearance for $279 I could had gotten 2 or 3, but I had no idea what they really were and what all they could do, I just thought it was a 4 space rack with a USB hook up..... That's the best rack I've got. You can signal chains via routing switches on the back and there are multiple ways of making those chains both digitally and analog. It allows you to use the inputs as an interface if you want, has Spdif I/O, BNC WC and Midi!
I'm not sure exactly why they let them go so cheap when they did, but those racks sell now for over $700 and they're worth it too. I bought it to house my 2u Sontechs because I just needed 4 spaces. I'm going to build one of Jeffs to put all my compressors and preamps in, and then make that Aphex a dedicated signal chain, then use my API 500 6b for my 2 buss. It'd be like VP28's>Sontech's>buss comp.

I think Sweetwater puts these racks on sale cheap because of what Jesse said earlier, if you've got space, you'll buy more modules to fill it .

Thanks everyone. I ended up grabbing a used Lindell 506. At $33/slot, it was just too cheap to justify the higher costs of the nicer racks, especially to just fill it with a Colour and DBX560.

I wish I'd known about that Aphex deal....that looks like a great box--portable 96khz overdub IO.
I know I've said this before, but the only real promise I see in 500 series gear (outside the DIY enthusiast) is when the form factor is used in a more complex device.
