Interesting that Adele stuck with what she does best - sing ballads. This first release really reminds me of the whole Sam Smith thing with the downtempo piano chords and slightly gospel vocal.

She's a nice counterpoint to all the relatively dry sounding, in your face, American pop.

And she still uses a flip phone! I think she's the best female artist since Tori Amos.

I liked her earlier stuff, but I find this new track hopelessly boring. She sure can sing though, love her voice. For me, her songs and production got a tad too slick with all that success.

I expected Lionel Ritchie to join in on the second verse... wondering if she was looking for him.

So, I'm not the only one who can hear the syrup? (the various tuning plugins including but limited to autotune)

Adele is a pop singer, not a soul singer. Aside from the format she makes a living in, her voice has a timbre many people enjoy. If you play or travel in the soul music circle today it's far from Adele and equally far from Otis Redding. You old timers might recognize the Mary Jame Girls DMX groove in this one. Still one of my favorite drum machines that I've never sold.
And this is just great..

I saw Ledisi about 10-15 years ago with Chaka Chan, both were amazing! Real organic believable grit, the Adele tried to pull me in but the super shine polish slick that Ward spoke of, and the caked makup faux video made me an unbeliever and lost me, the risk of tying unnessessary images to song?
she has pipes, she doesn't know how to use them for good..... Yet, she's talented enough to just be herself, and I think about everyone would enjoy that, until then she's just a larger cog in a pop BS machine imv

Greg Kurstin is her Producer/Writer, he's also produced for Kelly Clarkson this year so I think I'll take a listen to see if he gave her the same polish. He's also produced for Beck "Dreams" this year. I would have gone for a more vintage approach with Adele's voice.

The intro to Beck's song has what sounds like an overly distorted clean guitar, not bad overall though.
And I listened to Clarkson's song for about 10 seconds, it has that Taylor Swift Autotune polish that you hear so much in todays Pop.

Reminds me of the Darwin Deez guitar tone.

First single ever to sell over 1 million digital copies in the first week. Great stats, but that's 1 million CD's she won't sell.

Beck has always been a bizarre mix of extremely tongue-in-cheek and heart breaking sincerity. Not a fan of the new tune, but Morning Phase was a great record. Guero is where he straddles the line - but Odelay, Midnite Vultures and Sea Changes are records anyone could enjoy. His lo-fi hip hop era stuff, like Mellow Gold, is also fantastic.
