Perhaps not studio related: The forced hot-air furnace in my new-to-me house is relatively loud when the fan is running and I would like to isolate the furnace room a bit. I am contemplating the traditional "sandwich wall" of two layers of 5/8 drywall with perhaps some green glue in between. However, I noticed that I can get some 4x8 sheets of 3/4" MDF at my local Lowe's. This got me wondering: MDF is quite heavy and dense. Would a layer of MDF, followed by 5/8" Drywall, be better than two layers of drywall? It would be more expensive, but worth it if the results are better.

I'd just use 2 layers of 5/8" firex board, no MDF because it burns and it's expensive.

MDF might "outgas" when heated too, releasing who-knows-what chemicals used to treat and glue it.
