I'm thinking about getting a new set of computer speakers for my desk in the office. I have a cheap set (~ $30) of Altec Lansing speakers on my desk now. I'll occasionally do some work on headphones on my lunch break, but can't really do much with these computer speakers other than checking balance a la Auratones (which I guess would be obvious).
Anyway, I'm considering grabbing a better set of speakers. I've heard some "Creative T10" speakers that sounded much better than these crappy ones that I'm using (same price range), but maybe it's worth upgrading to something better? The Kef x300a get great reviews, but $800 is way over budget. The AudioEngine A5+ seem like a more reasonably priced speaker with good reviews, but still a bit more than I want to spend.
Mackie CR4's maybe? JBL LSR 305?
Is any of this stuff even going to be worth spending money on? I have a set of KRK V4 Series I speakers at home not being used, but always hated them. Am I better off just spending $30 on a cheapo set of speakers or spending a couple hundo to get something (halfway) decent?

Sam's Club sells Logitec 323 speakers for like $49.00. A self powered 30 watt sub and 2 satellite speakers with a front ported speaker and rear speaker. You can also control the volume of the sub and over all volume from the speaker. I've bought 6 sets of them. T.Vs, computer, and tech room. You should check them out.

Yeah, very interested in how they sound, and more importantly, how they translate.

Yeah, very interested in how they sound, and more importantly, how they translate. These terrible Altec speakers that I'm currently using translate really well, I've found, but they totally lack detail and bottom. All midrange, but if stuff sounds ok on these, it usually sounds good elsewhere. Great for checking mixes. I borrowed my coworkers Creative T10's on Friday and listened to those all day. They sound artificially hyped in the bass. I don't think I could use them at all to mix on, but they sound better as a set of speakers on the desk to play some background music. Hopefully these AudioEngine speakers sound decent. To be clear, I actually grabbed the older A5, not the A5+, FWIW.

Awful to listen to, even more so than NS10's, but nothing quite translates a midrange like them..

I like the little Cambridge Soundworks cubes, and the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 in this sector. Those have been my favorite finds overall. Although I do have a ghetto/DIY rigged Logitech subwoofer with some no-name cubes on top that also sounds pretty decent.
I certainly feel that this is a valid speaker type for the modern studio, even just for casual listening, but also potentially useful in a mixdown scenario. I know a few 'top pros' are using stuff like these for their grot box satisfactions.

Love my Focal CMS40s, would also look at the Foster speakers as they're well liked and widely used.

They were double boxed. The inner box that the speakers were in had about 2" of space in the front or back and there were 2 priority mail envelopes in front of the speakers protecting the front. Really? That's the best you can do for packing materials? Perhaps some bubble wrap? Maybe even some peanuts to fill the empty space. It's not that difficult. I found a power cable in my office that matches the size needed and can power on the main speaker, but don't have a speaker wire here to test the other speaker. Needle nose pliers work to adjust the volume for now. Hopefully, both speakers work as they should and I can get a partial refund for the damage. I would much prefer that to sending them back and getting a full refund. We'll see.

Total PITA. I grabbed a generic speaker cable at lunch for $1 at the stereo shop down the street. Got them set up on my desk, right speaker has constant his and had some pops. The seller said that he would refund the money for me to return them, but it's a lot more hassle than I was hoping to deal with. Let's see how long it takes to get my refund.

Man that's terrible. Getting bunged up on used gear is such a bad experience. As a buyer or a seller. Seems to happen to me once or twice a year. I guess it's worth it, but still dang man. There's some real knuckleheads out there.

Bummer. There is a silver lining though, you can try them out, and if you don't like their sound, return them. The bangup gives you a perfectly reasonable excuse.

Well, it's official. I lost my mind. I returned the broken AudioEngine speakers and set up my old KRK V4 s1 monitors in my office for a couple weeks. I never really cared for them, but had them laying around, so figured I would give it a go. Guess what, turns out I still can't get down with them. Well, yesterday, my "new to me", Adam S1-A's arrived in the mail. These things are worlds better than the V4's, that's for sure. Really, really nice stereo image. Full sound, yet compact. So far, so good.
