Because I'm bored, I love digital and I think it sounds just as good but I'm that bored working everyday recording music with my macbook pro that now reminds me of university. So I've picked up a 16 Channel Tonebuss and I'm grabbing more stuff as I can afford it/see it in the classifieds (the CDN dollar is worth $0.74USD so I need to be as thrifty as I can). I need opinions on the following pieces, I generally trust the community here to be a talented bunch so with that being said here's what I am considering.
- Elysia Nvelope (drum bus)
- TK Audio BC501 (mix comp)
- Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph (ST vocal compressor)
- Bettermaker Mix EQ (I like that this is fully recallable, haven't heard much about it though)
- Rupert Neve 542 Tape Sims (for printing mixes back through)
- CAPI Missing Links (again for the printing mixes through)
- CAPI FC526 pair
If you guys have opinions on any of these I'd love to hear them

can't go wrong with the Missing Links, but you'd get more mileage out of a pair of VP28s, as it's like having some Missing Links with more gain and phantom power.

I think the VP28's are a little more colored too...If you do get the VP28's, make sure to get the Litz Wire transformer. Never used the RND 542...how is it?

have you checked out the silver bullet ? I did look at it but the price is high, I hate the look of it and I would like to have something that can do the API thing to compliment the Neve based summing mixer

Missing links over most everything else. They are so incredibly useful and sound great.

- Rupert Neve 542 Tape Sims (for printing mixes back through) - CAPI FC526 pair If you guys have opinions on any of these I'd love to hear them I have a pair of Neve 542s, I like what they do. Mixes just sound better with them inline. Over time I have drifted toward minimum settings, without using the "silk" feature. A bit of saturation and blend at 30 IPS does the trick, every time. The reputation of the FC526 is well-earned. I love mine, they sit on my drums OH bus all the time. Get a pair, you won't regret it.

I have never liked the 15 ips. only use 30 ips. only have one 542. track myself singing accompany with acoustic guitar. turning the 3 main knobs as well as changing between red, blue and no silk........all kinds of combinations can be fun. its taken me a while to appreciate it. did not use it for a long time. I like what it can do to tone sometimes. for example, too bright, give it some blue silk. too dark, red.........

Yes, the silk feature is an "adjust to taste" thing IMHO, and functions in the way you describe to my ears. I usually used a little Red until I added a Sonic Farms Creamliner to my 2-bus earlier this year: I set it to Fat 2, Air 2, Pentode mode, non-SS transformer. Gets it done.

roger all that. no experience with the Creamliner. no real experience with tape from the old days. (a little bit, on an extremely small limited scale.) but, man I'll tell ya, though it has taken me a while, I really am sooooo digging my 542 now. to me, it CAN (not always) sweeten the tone. I had to experiment for a while, to dial in something I like. since I'm an all hats, and I'm using it for tracking, I can't sit there turning the knobs and pushing the buttons on it, while I'm occupied singing and playing guitar. one only has so many arms, hands and ears. lol

I own the Elysia Nvelope. It is a flexible box and does what the Youtube demos portray it to do. It's been reliable. No problems.

Looks really cool, I also had incredible results with the DBX160 on the drum buss the other day and am wondering if it would be a worthwhile buy, they're dirt cheap.

The only thing that lets the 160 down a little on drum buss is the lack of side chain.
It would also be handy if it had a blend knob.
Using it on channel duties like kick snare you don't need those extra features.
Do like vca comps on rock guitar buss as well.

Great stuff, I didn't realise they added sidechain to the xt.
I'm currently using the 160sl.

I really like opto compressors on guitars, FET on vocals and VCA just sounds awesome on drums (occasionally I'll try an 1776 on drums with decent results)

The 160xt's live on my kick and snsre and sometimes drum buss. Gssl with all the fixings (turbo, sss, etc..) on the main (with another on the drums occasionally). 1176s are my vox go-tos and I often add the la2as for radio friendly umph. Bass miced through the vp26 with a DI through a tnc 1073 through an la2a also gets a great result. Guitars through neve clones through helios 69 clones has gotten a lot of use lately as well. Looking around the room I use a lot of diy stuff nowadays

When I went to 33609 on drums, I removed most other inserts from the single tracks. The only thing I kept was the 1176 pair on the overheads that I use to reduce some of the transient. That thing just makes drums fatten up amazingly.
