Just wondering , all things being equal for monitoring, do people think any one amp type is better: A,B,C D ?
Take dual mono over stereo ?
Or do generalizations not apply ?

In theory I would love a big old pair of class A Mono Blocks, but the cost electric bill and while they would help beat the place in winter the AC bill in summer wouldn't be fun. In reality a Jim Williams Modded Adcom GFA 555 is pretty hard to beat Wait it did beat a pair of Krells! If Jim were to repackage his work in a Fancy package like the old Levinson No2 he could charge $10k and they would eat them up !

As Jim is currently modding my 545, that is music to my ears !

that is what I am thinking so I will start with the 545 and if I see a deal on a 555 maybe grab it and sell the 545.

I had an Adcom amp when I had my home studio, and it served me well for ten years, I never once thought I needed more. Here's a Stereophile review of the 555. www.stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/678/#bGu85OhShSop7zDa.97Don't worry though kcat, if Jim Williams is tweaking this for you, it'll be more than enough for your needs I think.

I'd love to hear one of the adcoms in comparison to the lexicon.

I think AB is probably a really good compromise of price/performance. I've never heard a class A stereo amp though.

Hey,, just got my new old Adcam 545 back from JimW after his mod: wow !! hooked up my 30 year old paradigm stereo monitors and dug out some 1/4 inch to rca cables: threw the power switch: nice reassuring bump all systems go ! (Reminded me of my old phase linear 400 and 2 sets of voice of the theatres I hadn't listened to the amp before Jim modded it so I am comparing to my memories of my adam a7x and I like the adcam alot : open, clear, tight , body and top end and quiet: nice mod ! props to Ericn and Tony for their encouragement to ship to Jim. I bought used and shipped the amp purely based on people's comments here : uber pleased !! upside down again Attachment Deleted

Johnkenn I am very pleased with the sound quality! jim mods the 555 mki amp too and that would give you gobs of power.
I have read a few references to people with one 18's wanting to get an adcam 555 for more punch.
It's a respected amp design (Nelson Pass?) and Jim knows what he's doing. Maybe you could borrow one and compare it to your lex?

What are the used Adcoms going for these days? I'm not really unhappy with my amp...just always looking for a way to spend my wife's money.

How'd i miss this? congrats on the JW adcom Matty, welcome to the club 8)
As far as my preference, i like class A stereo or better still.. mono blocks for great dynamics/ accuracy for mixing, but i'd prefer a single ended tube amps through some big ole highly sensitive 15" woofered/horn drivers for personal pleasure, complete with huge mid bass punch filling up the room!! If I feel as if i'm fist pounding out a kick drum phrase on my chest, then i'm all 8)

I think if you keep your eyes open you can score one for between $2-300, i managed to pull an Adcom gfa555-pro for $175 because it had a problem, turns out it was a wire lead fell off the left input jack... nice 8)
