Ok, so i'm going to build a pair of these clonish Emt 140 plate reverbs, i'm a construction contractor by day, and a modestly accomplished Tig and Mig welder, i will be making the chassis frames from thick walled aluminum tubing to control weight(thickness not defined just yet), and my damping plates will be motorized with bosch actuators from bmw seats I will be putting them just outside my room, in a weather proof, semi temperature stable environment(SoCal ). My tentative plan is to use cold rolled mild steel on one unit, and stainless on the other, the stainless should prove to be a little brighter(thicknesses ytb determined). Any info, material links, recommendations, suggestions, experiences, i would love to hear, and would be greatly appreciated! it's been a long time coming, and i've decided it's time to move on this. thanx fella's, i'll post up my progress T here's a few links of some stuff i need to read, please post anymore you might know of? www.prosoundweb.com/article/how_to_build_your_own_plate_reverb/www.brianroth.com/library/buontempo.pdfwww.danalexanderaudio.com/emt.htmlwww.triodeel.com/emt140d.gifwww.triodeel.com/emt140c.gifwww.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=10718.0www.platereverb.com/manuals/Plate%20Construction.pdf !warning, the 80" outside dimension detail is a fail!www.platereverb.com

Looking forward to hearing about your progress with this project. I'm a big fan of the 140 and the 240.

thanx fella's, i've already changed the plan a bit, i'm going to pirate an old convention display i built a while back for a client, it's made of 2" square tubing, and almost perfectly size already, i have enough material for both plates!, a few adjustments and i'll be there. I'll also save a bunch of coin on material! secondly, i'm going to make the dampers manual lever, my original plan for the bmw actuators was to build a robotic mic arm, i'm going to keep that dream alive...for now lol!

Thanx pace, i cut almost all my steel today, tomorrow i'll weld together the basics. I made the bottom foot bars 23" long so i could put casters on the bottom and still have lots of stability. I'm not sure what i'm going to do about driver/pickups for these things? Jim Cunningham's site doesn't have an order section, and when i tried to contact through email, it gets returned as permanent delivery failure?? I think i'm going to ask the master Jim Williams if he knows of, or if he can come up with something really hifi to drive and pickup these things. I read somewhere he got his echo plate ll?, to 100+db SN! I think plate verb like this would benefit greatly from a super low noise floor like that, and some audiophile electronics to boot, the reverb tails would be amazing.
anyway, pictures of progress tomorrow night i hope
Peace T

Eagerly awaiting progress report!! Hey pace, Ok, this kinda sucks, but ultimately you guys are gonna laugh, i started cutting up my steel like i previously posted, then i discovered a fatal FLAW in the JCC plans!!!! The plate length is 79", the plan calls for the frame to be 80" on the outside dimensions(which i cut), considering the square tubing is 1.5" sq, that would put the plate over the frame, causing proximity or damping effect problems! So i had to abandon ship I have made the required adjustments to stay within EMT140 plate parameters, but now i will be required to start over on these due to the fact that i already cut my stock 8( But all is not lost, I really wanted to build the frame out of aluminum to save weight, so i will now be doing that, i also found another use for the steel i already cut! i will be linking to another thread on my next post later tonight or tomorrow, so you guys can see how i made lemonade out of my lemons lol! It's really friggin cool! T

I think getting 3 diffusers out of an attempt at a plate reverb isn't so bad. I mean reverb is reverb, right?

Oh shit! really sorry to hear that. Good that you can re-use the steel. no worries pace, i really wanted to build the frame out of aluminum to keep the weight down, i think an original Emt 140 was well over 500lbs!! I'll get rebooted on this project in about a month, jazz is right though, the rollbots are way cool(rollbots? instead of the 3 stooges??..hmmm lol) T

Rollbots!! Why not pun-name them after Transformer? Modulus Prime! Diffuser Sigma! Modeblock!

Ok, because i'm so stupid, Gobots! get it?.. Gobo...ts he he Damn! Rollbos...? i should start a poll lol Gobots works. I'm sticking with calling one of them Modulus Prime. It's a nice mix of hippy slang and sci-fi. "Grab the Modulus Prime..maaaan!"
