I think there are only 13 A-Range consoles in the world. Could be wrong though.

The A Range is a pretty awesome beast, but Most are are very different from what they once were and talk about different channels sounding different at this point. I loved the Cherokee / Smart board but I also know what Lonya did to keep it running !

I loved the Cherokee / Smart board but I also know what Lonya did to keep it running ! A couple weeks ago I had a guy come through Chan's that worked at Smart. He was saying that it was a great board, but the faders on the EQ were a PITA to work with. Looked awesome, but less functional than standard knobs.

Yeah, the legend of some of these boards are probably bigger than the actual sound.

I used to cut on an 80B pretty often. No flies on it at all. Sounded great.

Holy shit, Martin. A 16inch, two-track tape machine? ? I bet that motherfucker did have some big low end!

I did a record on an 80B. I liked it, though I was the artist and not the engineer and had no idea what was what. Lots of fun though. Tape-edits, grease pens, those two-tier knobs, lots of beer....

I paid only a little attention to gear back when I was recording my demos and albums. I was good at hearing mixes, but always needed an engineer to get what i wanted. It was only when I had my own studio at home that I began to look into what gear to buy. The 2" 16 track was incredible, I felt like I was finally sounding as good as a Led Zeppelin record did then. I forget which brand, Ampex, Studer, Ortari, .. My favorite overall was the 24 track Studer though, but nothing ever touched the palpable sound of the low end on that 16 track.

Happy birthday sir!
I like to think about gear sometimes, even if I can't afford it now. If you had $2,500 to spend, would you buy that Trident board I posted a link to, with the upgraded power supply, custom desk and patch bay, or a Soundcraft Ghost for say.. $1200, and then get it modded?
I'd probably go for the Trident. I have only heard cowboycoalminer's Ghost, and it is pretty convincing though.

I did maintanence and repairs/mods to the 40 input A range that was once used at Group 4 recording in Hollywood. It was Angel Balister's place known for doing many TV shows and movie soundtracks. The EQ 'faders' were POS, all of them had bad spots that created weird EQ curves. Replacing those was first up for normal operation.
This console measured pretty good on the AP anal-yzer, about .05% THD and a whopping -1 db at 200k hz, much more bandwidth that any analog cosole made back then. It has a breathing quality no Neve ever had.

Back when they were new, Neves always had a suffocated sound quality to many of us. It's mind-boggling to see the attention vintage Neves get today.

Yeah - you know, 1073's can be "tight". Not sure how to say it, but the upper mids can be laser beamish.

In the early days Hans Zimmer and Trevor Horn worked together on an A Range in a studio called Nova.

There were only a couple in LA back then, Group 4 and that place out in Chatsworth, Smoke Tree? The Group 4 console was a big one at 40 inputs. It was re-fitted with Jensen mic pre transformers, JT-115 or 13KC, 1/10 or 1/5, can't remember.
A lot of string and orchestra dates were done in their rather large tracking room for a bunch of those 1970's TV shows. Other than those mic transformers, the rest of the console had none. It was different than the later B range that was all 071 opamp based like the 80 series, sans discrete output transistor drivers.
Angel Balsister was a hell of an engineer, I knew his son well as he got me the Group 4 gig. He also recorded Hendrix in 1968 as I have the tracks here.

On the back of a colleagues Trident below the vu meters is a little ancient sticker that says 'for repair call Dan Kennedy at xxx-xxxx' Thought that was neat.
