Never had an eye on a DBX 160 but today I read that some AE love it. Anyone on this board who knows the feel of the 160. How close do the Waves gets in your opinion?

I use the 160 from waves but if you watch In the lair's from pensado he has settings he uses for the Focusrite plugin and tha works really well as well.

The red compressor, I assume? It's okay. Any fast peak compressor should be able to do the DBX thing to some extent.

I have the UAD 160. It's my fave on kick, bar none.

I saw one at Bill Szymczyk's Bayshore studio in Miami and was surprised to find out that he had made a lot of incredible sounding records with a 160 on his mix buss!

I bought the originals when they came out in 1983. One session back then brit AE/producer Dennis Mckay made me strap a pair across the mix buss on an album by jazz-fusion artist Steven Bach. It was called "Zero Gravity".
I had to ask him, "tape feed or monitor feed?" as I knew what was inside those things and what it would do to reduce the quality of the mix I worked hard on. I hoped he just wanted to hear the effect to determine radio readyness but he wanted to print them to the JH-110C 1/2".
Sessions that ended up like that helped feed the desire to make those things musical. It also had me use an occasional 'ghost writer' name as I didn't want my real name associated with what I considered a career reducing release.

I think they're talking about the original DBX160vu which came out in 1976

Not the new red plug that came out. Although it should work. Im talking about the ancient avid plugs D2 and D3

Bob you have anymore awesome stories about Bill? This post has made me do some serious digging this morning. Man there were a ton of great engineers from Michigan. haha one of the things that makes me proud to call it my home state.

Bill stole my favorite assistant in California and made him a first engineer. I guess the best feature of Bill's studio was a switch under the console that made the words "Go Home!" flash in nixie lights on the meter bridge.
What blew everybody's mind is that Bill's studio was built from the ground up as one floor of an apartment complex. A few years after it opened Bill was evicted in spite of his 20 year lease so the building could be bulldozed and replaced by a high rise. His monetary compensation was insufficient to build another studio.
