Foote Control Systems is blowing out the last of their 500 series simple RMS based compressors for $175 ea direct, down from $325. They are really good, and a pair links via the 500 rack link pin (in racks that have it) when in correct adjacent positions.

EmRR, do yours have the transformers or transformerless?

All mine are transformerless. I have transformers everywhere already, don't need more.

I emailed Roger-- it's a CMOB-4L 50/50 steel/nickel 1:1. But he said any 1:1 transformer would work as long as it fits. Got a quote from cinemag for $22/each.

I'm gonna order them from cinemag. However, I noticed in pictures that the 502 has the cinemag CMOB-3L, not the 4L. Specs on the 4L seem a little better (see below), but we're getting way over my head at this point! I asked Roger to clarify..... cinemag.biz/output/PDF/CMOB-3.pdfcinemag.biz/output/PDF/CMOB-4.pdf

Haha.

Haha. Roger confirmed that he prefers the 4L version for more color, but the 3L will work too. That guy is super helpful! I haven't even heard the compressor yet, but I'm definitely a Foote fan now.... Regarding carnhills, from Roger on GS: "The Cinemags are more colored than the Carnhills in this application. The Carnhills in the P3Ss can handle signals up to +30 dBu before serious transformer coloration occurs. What the Carnhills do for that box is sculpt the low end not unlike a mild EQ, this because of the massive core and resulting large inductance value. The Cinemags can handle up to +19 dBu before coloration occurs, this is much earlier than the Carnhills. When I play music with lots of bass action through the Cinemags, I can clearly hear the coloration on the bass frequencies.... Tends to bring the bass instruments forward a little, and enhances the harmonics in those instruments. The Pico 502 and P3S circuits can easily output a clean +26dBu, so with Carnhill you haven't reached the point of transformer saturation where with the Cinemags you are pretty much in the middle of the "saturation zone" at those levels if needed. There is kind of creamy, silky thing going on with the Cinemags even at moderate levels that I really like."

Do you know if these Cinemags come outfitted and / or if the comp is actually outfitted with the connector or just solder points? Also, how are you ordering the trannys? Do you have a contact over there are you just emailing cinemag@att.net?

I noticed that too and asked Roger about the molex connector... he said to just wire it up directly unless you have a $350 molex crimp tool. For Cinemag, just call the number on the website, and usually their president David Geren answers the phone, and he can take your order.

4x Aphex 651 Expressors & 2x Aphex 661 Expressors. The 651's are mainly used as peak limiters when tracking. Fast attack and release with a fairly high threshold. Most of the time they aren't doing all that much and are there just to avoid clipping the converters which they manage to do quite invisibly. The more character type comp/limiters are generally used during mixing. I tried to buy a pair of 661's last week. Made an offer, guy countered, I accepted, then he never gave me his PayPal. I messaged him a few times, no response. Oh well.
