...when I hear something like this, I find myself questioning all the gear and converter hype...seriously!

Info about process: Recorded to Cubasis using a Focurite iDock and mixed in Cubase 8 on PC. No samples were used. The bass is plugged directly into the iTrack Dock and processed entirely in Cubasis on the iPad with compression and the guitar amp modelling. The song was mixed in Cubase 8. Guitars and overheads compressed on the ipad, so they were left alone in the mix along with the bass. Low mid on the kick was carved out around 350hz, a bit of a boost at 70hz, and it was a bit clicky so also carved a bit out around 4k. All the vocals were doubled and they were all treated with a bit of de-essing, compressed with State's 1176 and a top end boost with Neve eq emulation.

If you look very closely you can see that they are lip syncing, and if you slow the recording down you can hear Megan Trainor in the background saying "I am a walrus".

cool , thanks for sharing .
Yes gear is all hype .
I used to say on GS , stick the beatles with an mbox and 2 sm57's in a room and they'll come out with a hit album . This kinda proves my point .

Meh, I think it's all misleading. They are using an interface as the heavy lifting and then just recording the data on the Ipad.
Besides that, it sounds exactly like I'd expect from SM57's and a low end interface. Cymbals are brash, bass and kick are boomy and ill-defined. Vocals have a low-mid bloom but his voice is so high pitched it doesn't affect it.. And what's with the guitar modeling? Why not record the guitar too? I'd say because the guitar distortion is one of the hardest things for a converter to record well..
Overall, the style of music fits the gear as it doesn't need to be super clear and defined. Now put something else, like some metal or pop through it and you'll definitely hear the problems coming out.
I mean, yeah, the technology is light-years ahead of where it was a decade ago, but still..

I would say it's not. Unless you just want to give tech points for the size of the iPad docked in that thing. A decade ago, any MacBook and Duet would've done that better and at 96khz which the iDock thing won't.

Great songwriting always trumps gear. But as a songwriter I am always inspired by that little bit of alchemy that comes from releasing sounds into the air and waiting in anticipation to hear how these magical boxes put them back together in a tapestry of sound. Its the same simple excitement I experienced as a kid hearing reverb on my voice. It's insane in today's business environment to blow money on Neves and vintage gear, but worth every penny if it keeps you engaged with making music as a human being. Music is elemental to being human, like walking in the woods, or dancing. Anything that helps resonate that part of your humanity in this modern world is worth every penny.

What does a good song have to do with this topic at all?

The guitar isn't modeled, it's a 57 in front of that Orange amp - for the purpose of recording performances for the video we shot one of the 2 lead vocal tracks being recorded and I did the guitar tracks separately.

Wow, awesome. The vocal doubling sounds so pro.
The guitar clams were a little off-putting I would have done one more take on that track.
When I started recording with my iPhone, and a cheap Tascam stereo mic, I was blown away at the sound, same as this video. I mean just compared to older portable/affordable recording stuff. The technology really has reached a new level.

I wanted to say thank you for yet another example of what I've said for years....recording gear isn't the bottleneck until it is....FAKE digital sources is almost always responsible for weirdness in budget home recordings.
It pisses me off during the demo process (where I use all kinds of fake sample/digital stuff) that the balances simply can't be set correctly. Nothing ever gels. You can never get it above "passable". No matter how good the samples. Modelers. Whatever--it's always passable and quick at best.
Anyway--keep on keepin' on. I just wanted to take the time to say thanks.
