I've been working with PayPal's software trying to pay for a GML 8200.
PayPal's software always goes through a security check, before you get to the payment. Initially, they would call my phone with some numbers to verify that I was legitimate. I would key in the correct numbers in, but it would go back to security check again. So, I called them and found out that the seller had had his account hijacked. So, they got that fixed and told me to try again. When I tried again, they stopped giving me the phone option, they wanted to send a text only. Since I didn't have a phone that could text registered, I had to register my cell phone. Thinking I was good to go, when I got to the security check and they wanted to send a text, the phone that could text didn't show up in their menu!
The guy selling is a Belmont Faculty member and has a Nashville production company. So, I believe he's legit. However, the PayPal security software has a lot to be desired. So, I'm a bit freaked by all this.
If this sounds familiar, or if anybody sees red flags in this let me know.
As an aside, I don't know what it was like before the digital age, but as a studio owner I spend an amazing amount of time troubleshooting computer based problems.

I've never had an issue like this before. I have had them "hold" large payments and send me an email before, but never like you describe.
I've had plenty of trouble with folks doing the whole "chargeback" scam on me though, where I get payment for something I'm selling, send it to the buyer, then they issue a credit chargeback with the credit card company they've stolen the card from before the company figures out it's stolen.
The CC company will take the money back, even leaving you in a negative balance (which you have to pay back to use your PP account at all during this time..) and then it's pretty much up to you to plead your side of the case to the CC company through Paypal, if PP decides you aren't a scammer yourself.
Then paypal leaves it up to the buyer's credit card company to decided if it's fraud.. All the while Paypal sits back and claims that it has no rights in the process and you're pretty much up to the whim of the credit company who will likely side with someone else. All this takes about 180 days to work through.
Luckily I've always won, but I've heard of folks having the same thing happen and losing thousands, with no recourse at all.
I'm guessing this is why Paypal is starting to do all these measures, because before it was a joke how easy someone could scam on Ebay/Paypal.

I've got my fingers crossed. I rarely buy used gear, and always for less than this. If it wasn't a GML 8200 I wouldn't be doing this. And going through this I thought about saying "fuck it" and instead buy a new Massive Passive, which I could get for a bit more with no hassles from the dealer that always does me right.

I have not been put through this security loop. What level triggers it?

I have not been put through this security loop. What level triggers it? No idea what level triggers this security. The purchase is for $3,600.00 All day I've tried to resolve the problem. My AMEX and my bank account- my two accounts on PP- have routinely processed these types of single amounts. So, I'm beginning to wonder if it's on the sellers side. Of course, PayPal won't tell you if it's me or him, and they won't process it on the phone. It is all software driven and the system won't process this transaction. So, I've asked the seller to get involved to see if the problem is on his end. However, I think they'll say the same thing to him-the software is here to protect you and not tell him what the exact problem is. If I was a "Karma" type of person, I'd pull the plug. However, the person has sent me links to his Belmont profile and his production web page. Hell, the person has his own Wiki page. He appears to be a known Nashville entity. That being said, I'm not going to pay without any guarantee and PayPal is it (I believe) for these kinds of transactions.

I finally got the transaction to go through.
I don't know why it worked. The PayPal manager who I insisted talking to and working through the problem with this morning said he did some things, but often they don't work, Anyway, here's what I did on my end. They wouldn't tell me what they did on their end.
1.) I deleted my Credit Card from my account after the rep said it could be the credit card. So, I only had my bank as payment as an option.
Now, all I have to do is hope that by getting the security system to let me through, I won't get screwed and that the security system knew better than I did what was good for me. :-(
I'll post if/when I get the item.
