I find that the m201 sounds best a little farther from the snare than other mics. Sounds good on kick beater and anywhere you need another reinforcement dynamic with controlled bleed.
Albini often paired it with an SM98 for top end until he switched to the Altec lipstick mic.
I think the M88 sounds better on guitar amps, vocals, and inside kick however.

Sorry for the lack of replies, was away in beautiful south west Kerry. If you want to know where the best Guinness is, you have to cross the mountain to get there! Glad to hear everyone's as excited about the M201 as I am. Definitely agree with EmRR - I've used them on snares at studios before and been very impressed, but they need a little more distance. Actually the distance/bleed ratio is what sells it for me. I don't like the "donk" of being too close.
I'm curious about the Joly Mod vs. Stock Oktava, heard Joly's ABs with a KM84 pair and was very impressed but I'd like to hear direct comparisons between to the two. I've also read about a loss in sensitivity. I'm all ears, basically!
