Buying my first M201 this week. And a pair of Oktava's! Between those and some more mundane bits and bobs it's a €1200 bill. Same week I'm moving apartment, too! Quick, banish my fears. Tell me I'm making a great move and won't regret it. Tell me to think of the toooonnnes!

I really like my oktava pair for OH's and Ac Gtr...... just don't make the mistake I did, and compare them directly with KM84's and you'll never know what you're missing Got the parts for the dorsey (sitwell) mod, which I'll be doing soon. I'll compare again to the 84's at that point. Been wanting an m201 ever since I got an M88.

excellent purchases.
I use both mics and they are excellent.
m201 on bass cab with an m380 is a default for me. default snare mic as well along with the sm57 but the m201 is my favourite under snare mic. it is also a good vocal mic if you can control the plosives.
my jolly modified oktavas are my goto acoustic guitar mics and have become my overheads mics as well. what's that nirvana lyric, something in the way........

Don't worry guys, there wont be a pair of 84's near em. Though I know where to borrow some 184's...epp, better not. Ignorance is bliss, right?
I'll go check out the Jolly mods again. I'm aware the Oktavas are dark but to be honest 'dark' isn't bad for a guy like me. I find too much top kind of drags my focus from the midrange when tracking. They'll probably end up as mentioned - some OH/Cymbal Mic duties, Ac. Gtr and if I'm stuck they'll do Piano (anyone ever use them on piano?). I'm just long overdue a stereo pair of SDC's really. They're just not exciting mics to me! But if I'm going back to the reality of building up clients, I'd better have the stuff to show for it.
Looking forward to an M201 for a snare mic - I've used them in the past and loved them. Really great - few inchs backed off and it's like you're in the room with the thing. Probably actually buying this mostly for my band, but when the guy on the kit doesn't have ham for hands I'll use it for recording projects too.

jazznoise, what Oktava's? Mk 012? You really should buy them used, unless you find a dealer that will take the time to match them. Apparently the pairs from the factory are not very close. Sorry... I own a few Oktava's, 012, 319, 219 (sold it), 2500. After living with them for a while I have had MJE mod them all. They are better, expecially the 012's best mod out of them all.

Build your gear selectively, slowly, carefully. It's better to have 2 or 3 very good utility microphones than a bevy of junk. I can't really put them all in order of exact purchase priority, but good utility microphones like SM57, Beta 57, Sennheiser MD421, MD441, Beyer 930s and a Neumann LDC (107 or 87 would be my first choices) or a Neumann TLM102 should be on your list. buying crappy gear is better than buying no gear at all... Can't say we agree on this one, Tone!

I don't know what's up here. Maybe because my Oktavas are from 1997? I forget I own KM140's, I always grab the omni Oktava instead. Apples to oranges on capsules, sure. The Neumann drive me crazy. Hard and brittle very easily. Make acoustic guitars sound all metallic, no wood or body other than a boomy quality if put too close. I despise that jangly scratchy metal string emphasis sound in an acoustic guitar. OH, the 140's have to be angled off axis to tame the brash. I should sell them, really. For me they win the award for highest cost / least use. I modded one Oktava, on the fence about doing others, they do different things.
M201's are cool.

I worded that poorly, the gear jazz mentioned is not "crappy", I just meant buying gear is fun, especially for modders, u can get the Stellar RM7 stereo ribbon mic for $175 right now, cheap yes, crappy no way.

I just took this as Tony having fun - "buying gear is exciting even if....." Sort of thing. I like my svart modded MC012's. Not the most detailed mics but I like them on AC Git .

The Beyer M201 is such a versatile and useful mic. Once bought i never thought about selling one. You will not regret owning it anytime.

I asked Samar about the RM-7, instead Mark suggested making a stereo mic from a pair of RM-3 to yield a superior system. It came out great. I never heard the stock sound, only Mark's dissuasion over its relative potential.

I have 4 Joly 012 mods. I really like them. 2 of them have his k47 head on them. These are phenomenal. They've won many shoot outs with big gun mics.

ALL of the chinese ribbon mics pretty much suck out of the box, a little love can turn them into fantastic tools IME. Put in 1.8 micron ribbons, samar toroidal trannys, chrome headbasket, rotating top headbasket ranging from double aligned-110*, ceramic painted black body turns it pretty cool, it comes with a great shock mount, case, and splitter box, windscreen. Just a few hours of work and under $500 to create 3 microphones in 1 (double ribbon straight on, single ribbon(just don't use the second) and stereo ribbon), It's crazy bang for the buck! if i don't get them sounding the way i want them, i can always send them to Samar for re ribboning at under $200 and they will come back world class, that'd be under $700 for about as good as it gets. little bit of sweat goes a long way, pretty good deal if you ask me 8)

I never heard the stock sound, only Mark's dissuasion over its relative potential. the limiting factor is the fixed 90 between capsules i believe, there isn't much to them beyond that, my headbasket is fully adjustable via some modifications, the top headbasket rotates from straight on double ribbon to 110*, alleviating the limitations that Mark was in all likelihood talking about.?., and creating an even tighter phase relationship than can be achieved with 2 separate mics.

I recall the argument for the RM-3 versus RM-7 was the smaller diameter, meaning a resonant body tuned higher, better treble. I added a 45 degree position for a DPA omni.
