This should give ya an idea of what BarFunGul looks like! That's amazing!! I can't believe that music has been mixed while under the influence!! Seriously, I think it would be hard to find records that weren't mixed under the influence of something. It's part of the culture for better or worse.

Go to a pub and watch people drinking. The more they drink the louder they talk. There has been research already, drinking affects hearing!!
I bet you tend to monitor louder and louder, check yourself with a video cam running while mixing.

When I finish (mixing) a record, I have a ritual called "the drunk ear'd listen". I have to get pretty blotto and listen. It's like a forest check....the trees have to be blurry enough for me to focus on the greater outline of the forest skyline, if you will.
I keep a note pad. I'm NOT listening on the DAW. That's important, because I literally CAN'T distract myself with trying to fiddle with something and miss something else. All I can do is listen to the stereo file and make notes. And often dance, more than likely not well.

Haha. Ok, so here's the deal... As stated previously I do pretty much have all I could ever want right here, except for two things....
#1 - Right now the weather here is FABULOUS, and it is usually wonderful from April to November / December. But after that, all Hell breaks loose, and since I hate the winter, and the cold in general, I think I've finally had enough. I really don't want to experience yet another miserable winter like the last one we had here in the North East last year! That being said, I've found nothing better as yet?
#2 - What used to be a flourishing market in my area, has all since dried up. Bands are far and few between. Most of the clubs are gone, and so are the bands.
Hey I still love what I do, BUT there just isn't enough of it here as of late... Hence, my looking for somewhere new to move to.
As for BarFunGul... The impetus for this pub was a place for my artists to relax, and hang after a long day of sessions.
Since building B.F.G. in my old joint. I've built and owned a large nightclub "The LiveWire" (500 + people) as well as a small pub, "Ale Mary's" (75 people) both here in my town. I only sold them because the Studio was too busy, and I couldn't watch over them like I should, And you can imagine what was going on behind my back... So I got out while I could......I sold both businesses.
The sad part is, the new owners destroyed the atmosphere, vibe and the great following I had built over the years. Both places closed in just a few years...Now totally Out of business.
So when I moved my studio into this new location, I needed a place for myself and my bands to hang & drink again, So I rebuilt BarFunGul here .....And the rest is history.
And I can rebuild this anywhere, and as they say .... they will come!
The only problem might be locating a distributor for the over 200 imported beers I carry here at B.F.G. I guess it depends on where I go.
Anyhow Last night had over 35 people in and outside of the pub... Lots of musicians, producers, and friends... Booking gigs (house concerts) now for the next few months!
Anyhow if you guys wanna schedule a get together here at BarFunGul, I'd love to have ya here. Last big party I threw was the "Helios Listening Session" a few years ago.
It would be a blast to actually meet some of you in person.
But we'd have to do it before the winter sets in, as you never know if you'd be able to get here because of the random snow storms, and just plain bad weather.
I'm in MIllbrook NY (12545) if ya wanna research the area.

I've read articles in Mix and other mags, back int he day, with Jack Douglas, Michael Wagner, Aerosmith, The Stones etc talking about how they would be mixing and partying and think they had something knocked out of the park... only to listen he next day and find that everything sounded like crap.
Stone cold sober is the only way to really mix effectively IMHO.

This is slightly OT, but I have also experienced the same phenomenon with caffeine. Many years back, I was in a jazz band that use to practice on Saturday mornings. We would always drink coffee and warm-up with a free improv jam. I can't remember why, but one morning we found ourselves warming up before we had that first cup 'o joe and we all noted how much better we thought we played as an ensemble. I'll be damned if the band didn't break up not too long after that. With hindsight, maybe it was in part because there was the emergence of the coffee faction and the abstaining faction. Who would'a thunk? Religion, politics and caffeine..
For the record: You'd have to pry the cup out of my cold dead hands..
