Yes a work with that kind of provenance is something to be very proud of!

I picked up a Tab-Funkenwerk V72s. This thing had taken a fall during a previous shipping and because of that, it was selling at a price too good to pass up. I got 'er up on the bench and with some careful soldering (and a lot of patience), I was able to patch it up nice. Sounds friggin' fantastic! Thanks for posting the pics! I remember seeing this for sale. I have a pair of Olivers V78M and a pair of the Mercury V72 single channel versions. Although both are touted as 'faithful reproductions' I can tell you that they are different from one another. The Mercury is probably closer to a V72 module but the TAB differs in that it offers input sensitivity and make-up gain attenuation. With the knobs at 60/40 the TAB emulates the V72. The ability to tweak the settings makes it a total beast. Crack open the cases and you can see the love that Oliver poured in to his transformers illustrated by the pics posted by indiehouse. RIP Oliver. Sad. Yes, it is very sad to think about what he might be doing these days. Especially when you think about how much he did and the impact he had.

That Berliner has me all hot and bothered. So did you ever get around to auditioning one?

Seeing the name Berliner in this thread: What ever became of them? I have a pair of Berliner SDC mics that I have used on agtr with good results. Haven't needed to use them in a long time though

Not wishing to sound like a Coil fan boy (I am) but I always wanted a Mercury V72 and then when I had the budget for one and was about to buy one my dealer said try this first and sent me a Coil CA-70s which just blew me away and I bought it. The CA70 sounds spectacular with my CM7 and Retro STA Level.
Then someone was telling me that actually a CA-70 is like a Gates SA-70 tube pre of old and that in fact a Coil 286 was much closer to a V72 type tube pre as it has an EF86.
So recently I thought a V72 would be a nice alternative for maybe acoustic guitar and BV's and other recording duties.
But now when I look at the various slew of V72 style pre's from Mercury, Locomotive and now the new one in this thread I find myself thinking, yeah but none of them have that Coil amazing variable negative feedback knob that makes the CA-70 so darn useful and flexible.
Am I missing something here, what would a Mercury V72 or Locomotive Weight Tank 72 have over a Coil 286?

?? I dunno, but I LOOOOVE my Weight Tank WT72's. I've got the coil 70's also. Love them too, but end up using the WT72's more often. Definitely very different than the CA70's. Never tried or heard the Mercury's. I'd say you can't go wrong either way.

I had the mercury v72s but like the undertone better. Also, love the locomotive 286a.

The Locomotive WT72 is the TITS! By the way. And we at Audioscape have had a discussion about making a 76, but after the 260 is in sufficient numbers and the 78h is out there and other two forthcoming products that myself and audioscape Trevor can't really talk about right yet. I'm trying to do the low-key shilling thing. Hope everyone's ok with that.

Since I love the locomotive 286a and Ward indicated above a compliment (putting it mildly ) of the WT72, I am curious if anyone has tried the locomotive 86B-2 which is two channels for $1999 (less than the 286a)?

The new 86B-2 is an updated version of the 286a. Solid deal. For years, I’ve been using the WT72 on vox and the 286A has been utility instruments. Fiddle, banjo, mando, acoustic guitar, bgvox, percussion.

I looked for a stellar pre mainly for vocals 5 yrs ago, so I ordered a Beamer (one channel each of their Creamer and Berliner) from Sonic Farm to shoot out against Chandler REDD.47. I liked the REDD just a tiny bit more so I went for it. Then I goofed with returning the Beamer so it has been lying in the box since then. This week I found that box again and was reminded and listened to the 5yr old shoot out again and was impressed by Sonic Farm. I compared to my AMS/Neves too and the latter sound like...broken almost and clearly thinner. The Berliner sounds more natural and effortless wile the Creamer sounds more colored and what I guess many would call more ready/finalized. Take this with more than a grain of salt as both pieces have a lot of options and can be dialed to sound in many different ways. Anyway, I got lust for a Berliner and just contacted Boris@Sonic Farm for a possible trade in...which probably won't be possible, so perhaps I'll try to sell the Beamer.. Basically just wanted to chime in when I saw this thread and say that Sonic Farm imo is up there with the best. Really nice and well built.
