Berliner, a 2 channel mic/instrument/line tube preamp, is our take on the legendary Telefunken V76, but with some important twists that set it apart from the 50’s original. Staying true to our “No Cloning” concept, we take the venerable V76 to the next level! Keeping only what is needed to achieve that “to kill for” tone and taking inconsistency, unreliability and one-trick-pony-ness out of the equation! The front end is a dual pentode variable gain stage with a regulated bias and EF86/EF806 tubes (instead of the discontinued EF804). This stage behaves and sounds exactly like the original. The output though, is a hybrid circuit borrowed from the Creamer. Without the step-down transformer, it preserves the sweetness and definition of the first stage and offers both transformer coupled and transformerless (switchable) output. We also added instrument (DI) inputs on the front panel and dedicated line input transformers so that this baby can be used to warm up your mixes as well. The amount of detail Berliner reveals is staggering! And all with that sweet tubey character! It will meet or exceed the expectations of an engineer hunting for the best V76 unit on the used market and add new features that classical tube preamps could’t even dream about. - See more at: sonicfarm.com/pro-audio/berliner/#sthash.f1ZZBuVV.dpuf

I have a Creamliner that sits last on the 2-bus. I like it. Gives me another gain stage and seems to fatten things up a bit. The effect is subtle but real. The transformer, EQ, and triode/pentode options are nice too. It's a winner, IMHO.

I wonder why no one besides Marquette has attempted a direct clone of the V76? Maybe it's such a small market for it that there's no money in it. IDK.

Just from price point the mercurey is 5100.00 for 2 channels the sonic farm is 2800.00 for 2 channels of course none of this matters if it doesn't sound like a v76 I may have to sell my korby kat for one of these I have a CV4 mod by shannon that cover most bases for me

All the Mercury stuff is heavily priced. I was just pointing out that there are others on the market.

So, I've actually been digging into these old Telefunken pre's and their modern counterparts. So, from what I understand, there is a V72, a V76 and a V78, is that right? What is the consensus on the most preferred? Is the V76 just a V72 with an extra gain stage?
I read that Tab Funkenwerk was making a V78 that was pretty good, until Oliver passed. Also, why is the Mercury stuff so EXPENSIVE? Good lord, might as well own the original at those prices.
Is a V76 the one to get? Also, where does something like the Dizengoff D4 fit in? Or do they?

I believe the V76 is basically two V72's cascaded...but I could be wrong. Either way, they sound different. The V76 has a forward top end - but really excellent. I haven't had a V72 in my hands in a long time, but I remember almost liking it better. More mids, less top. The Retro Powerstrip reminded me more of a V72 than a 76. Never used the 78, but isn't that non-tube? A used V76 goes for about $4000 right now without rack if you find a private seller. At VK, I bet they're going for double that. Ridiculous. They definitely sound great, but I feel like I can reach the same result with a great discrete pre and tube comp.

All the Sonic Farm Berliner reviews I can find are overwhelmingly positive. Does anybody here have any real-world experience with it yet?

The reason a true V76 clone is so expensive and maybe the reason why the Sonic Farms is so much cheaper is the transformers and inductors. To get someone to build real copies of the V76's transformers and inductors on a small scale would cost a fortune. I was told this is what Mercury has done (I don't know if it's true). Perhaps Sonic Farms has found a cheaper work around.
I agree with John, the V72 can be a sexier vocal pre.

We have a Mercury Bruder which is a two channel pre consisting of a V72s pre and a V76m pre. While I can't compare it directly against the originals both channels are great.

I own a Tab V78M, built by Oliver. It's a beautiful mic pre. I have no basis for comparison to the other units mentioned here, much less the originals, but it is very different from my Vintech x73i pair. Super round and clear. I use it for vocals and acoustic instruments. It is a great flavor to have, imo.

I picked up a Tab-Funkenwerk V72s. This thing had taken a fall during a previous shipping and because of that, it was selling at a price too good to pass up. I got 'er up on the bench and with some careful soldering (and a lot of patience), I was able to patch it up nice. Sounds friggin' fantastic! Thanks for posting the pics! I remember seeing this for sale. I have a pair of Olivers V78M and a pair of the Mercury V72 single channel versions. Although both are touted as 'faithful reproductions' I can tell you that they are different from one another. The Mercury is probably closer to a V72 module but the TAB differs in that it offers input sensitivity and make-up gain attenuation. With the knobs at 60/40 the TAB emulates the V72. The ability to tweak the settings makes it a total beast. Crack open the cases and you can see the love that Oliver poured in to his transformers illustrated by the pics posted by indiehouse. RIP Oliver. Sad.
