So, I'm sure everyone got the same spamlike email this morning as I did about Avid's new line of controllers. But, here's the thing--I actually went and looked at prices. The "little" one that looks like a project studio the configurations with 16 faders like $32-50k? Wha...? This is a controller right? Yes, it is.
So, it occurs to me--as someone who cherishes my tactile control, that if I think this is absurd...who is the aimed at? I mean, if I'm gonna pay that kinda bucks, I'm getting an actual console. Wunder...API...Tree...something that will actually SOUND good and not be tied to a computer app (especially a SINGLE app)...
When I saw the concept I thought "that's really cool"....but, then when I saw the cheapest config was like 8 fader nothing for $23k, my attitude shifted quickly.
Am I alone in thinking this?

No - that's crazy...It's got to be aimed at churches and such that have more money than time to research...

I did notice that here in Australia - they are doing the launch at Hillsong church - which is the absolute definition of a money church. So I think you are spot on about the target market

I did notice that here in Australia - they are doing the launch at Hillsong church - which is the absolute definition of a money church. So I think you are spot on about the target market Umm, Hillsong have done more for worship music (globally) than almost anyone else and have really raised the bar for the genre. They got game! I would never classify them as a mere "money church". They've set the standard in that music segment which accounts for 22% of global music sales - according to the last RIAA stats I saw. That's serious business. They're high quality. They've got real soul too. Now as for the new Avid "consoles"... they'll sell. I'm seriously considering the top end of their line instead of an SSL AWS948. I'll bet they'll do well with post-audio houses too.

Well said of Hillsong. They seriously raised the bar in live recording, production and distribution. Even beyond that, they have an amazing writing team and have stayed on the front edge for nearly 20 years.
They do a lot and train a lot and are likely emulated more than any present act or band.

I don't disagree with either of you about how well their business does. And it sounds like neither of you disagree about the money church comment either - considering some of the stats you just mentioned.
Hopefully Jesus doesn't damage the new Avid controllers when he storms in and starts overturning tables (like he did in the book of Matthew when the church was being used as a marketplace).

Someone make popcorn. It's time for everyone's favorite new exhibition sport: Christian bashing! I can't wait until they send in the lions . . . BTW stating they were not a money church was a rebuff. I don't see how much clear I could've been.

I don't like Christianity being run like a business. But the Christian Music Industry, including all elements like Christians in mainstream music and White Metal, is merely people making a living at their craft (like all of us, Christian or not) who happen to make their music about messages, life experiences, stories, that they find relevant to their own lives. Just like all songwriters, singers and musicians.
As for the commercial aspect of their operation vis-à-vis AVID, I expect an honest evaluation.
