Doesn't everyone in America own a gun? :-) I meant a fix for the dog/house, not the skunk. Haha.

Must have been skunk night last night. I could smell one in our backyard.
Our entire house stunk when our dog got sprayed. We used:
1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap
Then, took him to the groomer. And kept washing him....
However, nothing but time (about a month and 1/2) got the smell to leave our dog and house.

lol, bang bang...
how about a motion sensor hooked up to a light. in the land of plenty, aka gods country this is used to stop ducks eating strawberries.
other methods include sounds hooked u to motion sensors.
final method, land mines.

A skunk killed and ate one of my chickens. They can be as aggressive and carnivorous as a Pine Marten.

If you can get some gloves and a cloth and can wipe off as much of the spray as possible before you wash, it's supposed to help quite a bit. (Yeah I know - now you tell me). dI didn't know that either after our dog got hit right in the face. See a skink almost every day these days. Cheers, Geoff

However, nothing but time (about a month and 1/2) got the smell to leave our dog and house. This was my method last night at 11:30 when it happened. Grabbed some de-skunk wash at the pet store this morning and did a second round with that followed by a shampoo. It's more the house that I'm worried about though. He came in for a second right atfer it happened because I thought he hot scratched, then I smelled it. Apparently it was long enough to stink the house to high hell. He slept on the porch last night, which also reeks. Basically 3/4 of my house smells like burning garbage. I put out cups of coffee grounds, sprayed a bunch of air freshener, and a mix of water and vinegar, but it still smells terrible. Not sure how I'm going to survive if this sticks around. Might have to demo the dump I live in. Haha.

The only thing i found really working against nearly (?) all, or even all, bad odors, is zinc ricinoleate. There are several products, you might even get something like the pure chemical. Unfortunately i know no source in the US, in Germany it's marketed as "Odex". It's also the stuff that actively fights smells in the good "sports" detergents. Works very well. You can even clean a parfum bottle from the inside without having ANY smell thereafter, so you get the figure. It binds smelling molecules very effectively. Simply works.

What ever the skunk sprays it is oil based and you need to break it down and wash it off the dog with baths. Are two dogs got clobbered one night when I let them out after a gig and all I saw was the cloud of spray and them running to come back in and trying to clean their burning eyes. I used the solution mentioned above to cut the oil down and try to get rid of it as best I could. Sad to say but your going to have to live with the smell for a month or two but it does go away. My wife was freaked out cause she has long hair and it worked its way into her hair too. Live and learn, I now have every hole in the fence blocked and closed up.
