If I were to spend money on a DI right now it would be Dan's Zod. The biggest problem with them is getting enough of the custom transformers to keep up with the demand.

$600 as opposed to $200, I'll probably check out the Ampeg for now, as I need something now

For $200 grab something like a used countryman for less than $100 or the half rack Summit for around $2225

What kind of head are you using? Does that have a built in DI?

My Ampeg SVT amp head has a balanced transformer direct output, built in for direct recording. Just plug into the amp and use the E.Q., ultra high and low switches, etc, it sends out the signal right after the preamp stage.

Dan's DI is as good as it gets and worth the wait.

Dan's DI is as good as it gets and worth the wait. Not saying Dan's D.I. isn't great, but this available for the same price and you get a preamp also. dizengoffaudio.com/?page_id=83

What kind of head are you using? Does that have a built in DI? Gallien Krueger Fusion 550, it has a direct out with a send control and pre/post

If that's the sound you're using live, why not in the studio too. Save yourself $200 unless you're specifically looking for an Ampeg sound.

AS nice as this is... you guys just WAIT until you hear what;s coming down the pipe!! I'm working with an electronic designer on the ULTIMATE tube DI/Pre for bass guitar. It will be similar to the Avalon in application but have presets like SVT, V3b, V4b, Flip-top 15, Flip-Top18 and Blackface Bassman... along with a bias control, variable impedence control and other things.
Right now, it would blow your mind!!
We're talking to certain manufacturers about bringing it to market. So just hold on!!

I'd check the manual, but most likely won't be an issue.

Fans was really impressively. Little more expensive than I can afford right now for a di though. It if you want something that sounds great - it definitely fits the bill.
That Tonecraft Di looks fantastic too. Only for the serious though at $1200

mobeach - looks like you're getting a lot of pricey suggestions! I agree with Eric - Country Type 85. What do you have for preamps. Type 85 through a nice preamp is great........

I'm going to try out the direct out on my Gallien Krueger then make a decision from there. I haven't used my amp for recording since Hardware was my recording platform. I think I remember it being a little noisy when I dialed in the settings I wanted, but I'll try it again.

I was really happy with the Bo Hansen DI'S I just built. I sat down to test it out and just kept playing. With it before the VP28 was very nice, gave a nice warm aggressive tone!
In contrast my Type 85 was more sparkly/crispy, less inspiring, and less amp like.
I play a '72 Ampeg V4-B with an active Yamaha Tr-4b.

I know this is more than you want to spend, but I love the A-Design REDDI Tube DI for Bass, Guitar, & Pedal Steel. Personally, I wouldn't use another Tube DI, that I know of at this point. Great for DI recording or dual DI + Mic-ed Amp with the thru jack. Inspired by the Ampeg B-15 Single - $745.00 adesignsaudio.com/reddi-all-tube-direct-box.htmDouble - $1200.00 adesignsaudio.com/reddi-v2.htm
