Hi fella's,
Ok, so my new monitoring set up is as follows so far, main nearfields are ProAc clones, secondaries are going to be Auratone clones, powered with a modded adcom gfa 555 amp.
I have 2 long excursion, 10" subs that i want to power with a second Adcom gfa 555, i generally prefer passive crossovers for speakers, but this is not as important on a sub to me, what is important is a variable crossover/filter point on the low pass, and an overall volume control. I will be switching the sub in/out for effect and fun primarily, I don't think it will be used for making decisions?, and it certainly will not be engaged all the time.
This approach is new to me, i did some searching, but it seems i'm the only one on the planet taking this route?? most subs use active plate amplifiers, i would like a simple, sub oriented, active low pass, and volume control preamp? or??, any ideas? To be clear, i already have a great and powerful amp i'd like to utilize.
thanx T

1/(2Pi(sqrootLC) for a two pole LC LPF.. series L, shunting C.
There are also plenty of calculators online for multiple poled filters, which i suggest at least 4th order.
The hard part is finding a point where your sub's upper frequencies and your monitor's lower frequencies won't overlap, or else you'll hit problems with phase and mixing, frequency peaking or nulling. What you are doing is making a 3 way speaker, just with the low freq driver as a separate unit. You'll still need the equivalent of a 3way crossover, but instead of being able to do simple frequency sweeps with the speaker in an anechoic chamber to tune the crossover, you'll have to include the room as part of the sweep measurement, but that also brings in the question of room tuning, which is much more important at sub frequencies.
But then again, if it's just for fun, there are two ways to do this. Filter and volume before the amp, inline with the input, or on the output, between the amp and speaker. It's up to you to determine which is better, but the cheaper solution is before the amp.

thanx svart, yeah, i'm thinking some sort of active crossover/pre before the amp, this way i can screw around with the overlap point and control volume. I'd like to just buy something cheap and easy, my DIY load is supposed to be shrinking as i finish projects....some how, it's perpetually expanding lol!

I'd steer clear of the active car preamps/filters. They usually are the worst for headroom and noise. Find a simple passive filter/volume setup and just bump your source up a couple db to account for the insertion loss.
