I just can't help myself when it comes to Helios. I know some don't care for them, but I love the cleanish with a little color, sweet passive EQ, and persnickity gain-staging...Kinda my weak spot...

This is one of my most dreamed about pieces, if it's good enough for the mighty Zeppelin, i gotta try it! It's not very far down my list.

The new reissues are very close to the originals, with a lot less headaches! Helios' modules, especially the Type 69's have a beautifully clean but woody sound. Very much suited for acoustic instruments, including drums. Personally I love them on everything. A few quirks yes, but after a few days you figure them out and from then on, it's really a beautiful thing.

every time i hear the Led Zep song, "the song remains the same", the drums sound so "thocky""woody", i cant help but tie the sound to the type 69, although this could be a completely psychosomatic condition, for all i know, those tracks may not have been recorded through the helios?

I'm also a fan of preamps that do not cloud the sound of the microphone or the source. Clean with little color is my general approach even when using Neves and APIs - by not overloading them.

I was just testing out the pre fader reverb monitoring trick someone showed me and recorded this snippet with the Helios/Brute...I took out some 1.4kHz on the Helios - prob a touch too much. No other eq...Love it... snd.sc/1dmQEEa

1.4 is not something you usually need to cut out of the voice as it's where a lot of the character for the voice is, and that which distinguishes it from other human voices. Woofiness is around 320-360, mud is usually around 500-600, GAKK or nasal tone is around 2k to 3k, sibilance is in the 6k range. Those are the usual targets. I like your voice a lot John, and since I'm a bit familiar with it I really hear what you're saying about the Helios 69. They're very open and uncolored.

I heard some of your earlier productions when you used the Helios and thought they were really good. I think I still prefer the Heritage flavor on your vocals but this here would defiantly cut through a mix better without needing much help.

Sure...I had posted about buying a cheap hardware reverb for the headphone cue. In PT's I use the Tritone Mute plug thingy on the track I'm recording and then monitor with Maestro for zero latency. So, by creating a pre fader Reverb AUX and sending the track you're recording to it, you can still mute the channel (so there's no latency while monitoring) but also hear the software reverb. I had totally never thought about that! Saved me $150 on a cheap verb.

I would love to compare that Heritage with my AML ez1073-500. I believe they both have Carnhill transformers and inductors, which is where all the sound comes from.
