Know there is loads, any good ones you guys use currently. Just listened to Keith Urban's Fuse and also Joy William's new record. Love some of those electronic drums sounds. Any ideas?

I use Ableton, and basically half the DAW is for sequencing drums. Logics drummer is pretty cool too. Tried Addictive Drums, but had lots more control just using Ableton so I can't really report on that or Superior Drummer.

BFD is my go-to for real acoustic drum sounds, instantly mix ready sound.
Electronic drums are all over the place, samples get used often. Spark 2 is a great one with some nice potential for going beyond basic drum sounds, including automation and modular synthesis. For straight ahead drum programming I would probably try Battery. UVI Beatbox has got some classic crusty old drum machine samples. Cubase comes with Groove Agent SE if you've already got Cubase, along with MIDI Beat Designer for step sequencing.
I guess those are my favorites. I hear a lot of talk about Geist but I haven't got past the learning curve. I've tried quite a few others but was disappointed with this or that, hence my narrow selection.
I really am overdue to try Ableton, I've got literally zero experience with it, other than hearing other people use it from a distance. I'm certainly intrigued from Sopwith's comment! Efficient and effective drum programming is something I still somewhat struggle with. I feel like Cubase might be a small part of that, compared to something more purpose built like Ableton Live.

I thought the Reel Machines ADPak would be cool, but much like a lot of the Addictive Drums stuff, I just find that they don't fit in a real mix...maybe it's user numb-skullery.

Spectrasonics makes Stylus RMX Expanded. I have not used it, but I have seen it in action and it looks pretty amazing, it's on my shortlist. I have heard this software was dated by some, but I still think it would be a great addition to any VI in the library. www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan05/articles/stylusrmx.htm

I have SD 2 and some expansion packs, and BFD 3. I only use them to play with my e-drums. I love them. they are super fun.

Is "expanded" an add on?

I believe they came out with the Expanded that includes all the expansion packs with the Stylus RMX software. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StylusRMXxp They also have an Expanded Add-on pack, I believe it's for the people that want to upgrade that bought the core Stylus RMX software before the expansions came out and want to add to their library. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SAGE5pkI have a ProTools educational recording class on 5 DVD's that I bought years ago, and they have a female singer working with a producer that was using this software. All they had was a mic, acoustic guitar, and Protools. She sang and played her song to a click track and they used this program to piece the rhythm section together. They used wood blocks, tambourine, and I have to review the DVD to remember if they used a snare also from the library. The enhancements that were added to the core editing functions were a huge breakthrough for how this program works. I have been eyeing this software for years, but just haven't pulled the trigger. If I review that DVD again, I'm sure it will make want to get it now. It seemed effortless and quick to throw something together. It seemed to be the answer for getting things done very quick. I am not sure of the learning curve, but you should check into it. It just might be the answer for efficiency. I am in a software buying phase right now, and I am looking at this again. I was looking at the demos on You Tube and it seems that most of the focus is designed for dance and beats now, and not real sounding instruments. It has changed so much since I saw it used back in the day. Something to check out though. You might find it also has real sounds in it, still researching it.

I have most of the Toontracks SDX for Superior 2.0 and I got the EZdrummer 2 software. After demoing many different triggers/pads, I went ahead and just got a V-drum kit. It was a painful price, and I really didn't want a big ticket item like this because I would have rather bought other things, but I just need to get my drums right and programming just takes to long for me. I love to be able to zero in on the ghost stroking, but it still is a long way off from the real feel of a real set, however I can deal with this setup if this is the closest we will get and it is a blast playing them. I am still tweaking the settings, so maybe I can get a little closer and just not know it yet. The hi-hat is the toughest thing to get right for me. I like to use it for many different open and close and in between settings. Do you have any ideas for me to zero in on better tracking and real functionality. I put SD2.0 on E-drums setting at default, but I think if you start experimenting with the settings you can get it closer. I am having an issue with the hi-hat being glitchy sounding between open 2 to open 3 on the hi-hat settings. It sounds like it is trying to use either one instead of smoothly transitioning into the 3rd from the 2nd open position. Maybe you have some settings in the brain and software that I can try out? Still tweaking, I have only had the V-set two weeks, and maybe only like 6 hours of use playing, not tweaking settings. I have been demoing other gear and haven't got back to using it yet.

I think he's talking more about electronic drums...
Seems like I checked those packs out a while back and they were mostly electronica - stuff that doesn't translate well to the stuff I'm doing. I probably just need to dig in deeper and program stuff myself.
Check out "Cop Car" by Keith Urban...wanna get more stuff like that. That could actually be real drums just filtered...

I know there are real drum samples in RMX, but I think you are right John, it seems to be focused more on other styles of music.

cool John. guitfiddler, I am absolutely clueless. I have only messed with it a little bit. I am new to drumming. the high hat is truly a cluster. works well when playing the e-drums by themselves. hook them up to the computer, and forget it. from my experience, SD 2 and BFD 3 are a joy in terms of what some of the preset kits sounds.......drums......cymbals..... and yes hi hat.....................but wait, hold it..........I gave up on the hi hat....... I tried a couple things......making the setting for my kit, a couple other things...........no good. best I can recommend go on the Vdrums forum. someone there might be able to help you. www.vdrums.com/

I have one of the newer Roland kits and thought maybe it will work better than an older kit. I used to have a td20 brain/kit and back then the software/my computer wasn't up to par, and so I sold everything. Now I just need a little more time to get the settings dialed in, I think.

I mostly use what i have, and this is Addictive Drums and Cakewalks Session Drummer. So far i like it. This said, for electronic style drums, i still have non-ITB machines, i.e. the Electribes M and MX and the Novation Drumstation. But they get used less and less these days. I also use samples and loops i just happen to have. This is for genres electronica and experimental music with different 80's and 90's influences...

Thanks Guys, Yeah I was referring more to electronic drums. Not electronica Johnkenn Cop Car is a great example. Not sure if its filtered. Probably is... referring to those drums in the start. Not sure if electronic drums is the right word. Must be sample libraries out there for these type of sounds, I just can manage to find them...

Yeah - I'm totally looking for stuff like that all the time. Sometimes I'll use stuff from AD2 and Reel Machines and then use some sort of filter on them. Wish there were more presets with Reel Machines...At least that's how I would go after that sound. I can hear guitar stuff and go, "oh, that sounds like a Les Paul through a Fender Blackface with a blah blah pedal..." But with electronic drums, I haven't used them enough to have a library of knowledge about them.

I would just try to lo-pass filter something out of what you have. Yeah, it's heavily filtered in the beginning. :-) What do you use right now for drums? Maybe we can figure something out that fits your bill?

One might get some similar result in filtering something out of a tweaked AD Fairfax I preset maybe, not really sure about this, but could work... hmmm

That sounds like a pretty basic filter treatment, yeah, over a garden variety kick and snare drum. Lowpassed down into the mids, no resonance or at least not much. Not too much bass there either, probably a high pass or low cut shelf. I think you could accomplish this very quickly with a basic digital EQ in your DAW. Sort of equivalent of the "telephone" sound people do a lot on vocals.
This is cool, the whole intro has a kind of EDM sound about it with the synth pads and filtered dobro. I keep hearing people talk about this phenomenon of country adopting pop and electronic elements, I think this is a good example. Makes it sound modern. Reminds me of some Smashing Pumpkins stuff, actually.
