Hi fella's,
I'm moving in a new direction with my monitoring set up, i've used the Mackie hr824's for quite a while now..i know, i know. I'm currently going with some ProAc's 100 (diys), a "switched in" 2x10" sub, powered up with 2 J Williams modded Adcom 555's one standard, one pro model.
I've never used a secondary set of nearfields(always used the car 8), I would like to add a "switched in" secondary set of nearfields that are great for contrasting the ProAc type, maybe less hi fi and more specific toward exposing potential problem frequencies in a mix? Maybe Auratone type? Just fishing for something you mix monsters regard as helpful towards making a translatable mix.
Thanx T

I gotta give one vote for Auratones. I have the old 5C versions. Ugly overall sound but great for fixing mixes. Your midrange will never sound better.
The other ones that work well are the old Realistic Minimus 2way speakers. They have more high frequencies due to the tweeters but can still reveal some midrange mix problems.
Of the two, I'd still go for the old auratones if you can find some. I've not used the newer Avantones, but I think they are more hi-fi.

+1 for the old Auratones (5C). I quite like them and sometimes even listen to CDs on them when I clean up my studio. Also a good way to get acquainted with the way they sound.
Basically, it makes sense to have two systems that are radically different. My mains are Adams A77X.

I got my auratones on eBay for 50$. They were a little beat up but the drivers worked perfectly.
Edit: i took a quick look on eBay for auratones, and you're right, the prices on the ones listed are ridiculous. It's only been a few years but it seems the prices have gone way up.

What's the goal? I honestly think the whole multiple monitors are of a seriously limited use if you trust your mains. And while I trust my Mackie 624s more than the 8s...they're still no slouches. I've had various secondary systems...to give me the "small" picture, but they've really ended up being useless in practice. If you'll just set the dim to crazy low volume--that's the reference you need that little shitty speakers give you--without the variance due to the "shitty" part. I mean, I would find I flip over to the little computer size speakers and something was too bright--so the F what? Am I gonna make it darker so it sounds better on the little crappy hyped speakers?
I mean, depending on the stakes of the mix...I MIGHT listen in the final hour on my main "listening for enjoyment" system (Oppo105/HK discrete/Paradigm Monitor9s)--just for a new "forgiving" but familiar perspective. It does occassionally catch some uber lows the 6s dont emphasize (but then when I go back, I hear it...and can fix it).
I often think there are certain techniques that are just flawed to the core--one is referencing tons of systems while mixing. Using "model mixes" post mid 90s is another. The balance and tone is SO changed by the brickwall limiting and clipping and utter garabge mastering, I'm not conveinced you learn anything important by comparing a raw mix buss to a mastered piece of redbook crushfest.

I use a single Avantone to go with the Rocks. I also use a set of computer speakers, Logitech THX with sub.

Tony, i would go for s.t. like the avanatones or the other obvious "pig speakers" that help you to judge a mix in terms of translation. The general point with the avantones is cleaning up the mix. Essential if you mix e.g. alot of overdriven or distorted guitar etc... They just flank out the bass below 100Hz, make a nasty 7khz bump and filter out above 10khz. Nice IM distortion due to broadband speaker. Reveals bass->mid problems. Single chassis for good stereo field reproduction.
Best regards, Martin

I wouldn't want a "judging" speaker like the avantones to have a lot of bass and treble. I want it to do one thing. I want it to reveal stuff that the big two-way speakers don't usually do very well.. Midrange.
Since my JBLs are digital, I've been known to run the analog auratones at the SAME time as the JBLs and just adjust the level going to the auratones so that it's close to the JBLs and make a pseudo-three-way speaker.
I'll eventually move up to a 3 way system but I'm waiting for a powered 3 way in a decent price range to come along.
