I'm thinking about adding a nice EQ. I want versatility with color and personality. On my short list are the Great River EQ-1NV and the CAPI LC53a's. A couple more that look like they may fit the bill are the Chandler Lil' Devil EQ's or Avedis E27. Anyone have experience with these? Not really interested in a Pultec-style. I really want parametrics with a decent amount of frequency bands....thanks.

The eq-1nv is top on my list. I want at least a pair. I seem to really prefer neveish eq's and the GR is that and then some. A friend has a pair that I've used a few times and I love it.

Well, flavor is in transformers and inductors, so I'd start there. Anything Nevish/API is going to have it. The type of metal being used is going to be the type of sound you'll get. Iron/steel is the most, and nickel is the more transparent. If you can find EQ's with DOA's you'll get a very nice compliment to the transformer/inductor. Those LC53a's look mighty tasty from a flavor POV. Great River, just about anything they put out is going to have a very nice sound to it, they really nail the sonics in their boxes. I've a GAP 573 that has the EQ sidecar and I love that EQ for adding some color, and it's nice having the pre to adjust the gain stages of it. I think you can get both of them for around $500, I love that little duo. Sounds killer on vocals and kick drums.
I've always loved the Electra though, I need to buy another one, I sold it when I needed fast money because they sell quick, that eq is very slick, but it does have some character to it, I won't call it color, but speaking about flavor, it's got some flavor. The hi's are silky, and the low's are punchy as hell. I need to get another one just for kick.

Thats the one. SPA 690 opamps with transformers. De-tented pots fully parametric.

jeromemason - I had a pair of Electra's. I sold them because I was down to only one mic pre (not including the 2 in my interface) and I was able to get 2 VP28's built for an awesome price thanks to Joel Phillips . The Electra's are the only pieces of gear I've ever sold and missed right away. I still want them back and may end up with one or two as well. They gave me the confidence to EQ a vocal like no other.......... I should also mention that I'm looking for something for E. and AC Gits and bass. Something that shuttles the partying-type of electrons into my guitar tracks with just slight boosting. dandeurloo - I've heard the Great River EQ is like this. I have the GR mic pre and it's my favorite pre to date. I know they make uniquely sonic gear (even if it's based on a Neve style). The AWtac Channel Amp has my full attention as well since I could get a pre and EQ in 1 module. I'd have to sell the Great River to make it happen. Great River mp & EQ or AWtac mp & EQ? Anyone experience both of these combos? Maybe @noah shain? Huh - not tagging Noah for some reason? I think it's spelled correctly?

I have the GR 500nv and the GR Harrison 32. Like I seem to do, I parked those GR Harrison's on 1 thing and haven't moved them. Toms. My all time favorite tom eq. I used them on kick and snare for 1 tracking session and then moved them. They were good there but I like to have a Q control on kick and snare and they don't have one. Hi pass filter is cool, it has a bump at the shoulder that I love for toms. The AWTAC channel amp is a sexy sexy beast. I wish I had an AWTAC console. It sounds so good on everything. I have 3 of them. A vocal just doesn't sound right to me anymore unless it's going through the AWTAC. If you want color, the channel amp will not disappoint. The 1k band is so good it's weird. I love these things. I don't know how they are not the most coveted pre/eq on the planet. It's a console style eq in the old school sense. It's sweet sounding at all freqs but it doesn't have a sweep able q. A couple of the mid bands have wide/narrow steps, which worked for all of us on the 80 series neves we love so much but it's not a surgical tool. It's a viberizer...and a friggin beautiful one at that. I have the eq circuit on always because it sounds so good. Even when not adding/subtracting. The channel is really flexible with 3 position impedance switch and forward/back switch. It's nice. Obviously I like AWTAC. I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for but I know it's absolutely stellar on all fronts. You should poke around the AWTAC design philosophy page on their site. This is not a marketing company. AWTAC channel amp is a meticulously crafted piece of gear. It's ALL color.

1073 types work on most things, especially snare, vocals, and guitar.
I tend not to eq on the way in. Like with vocals if you want to retrack anything.
I know you said you didn't want a pultec, but sometimes 2 broad bands with better phase response simply sounds better than 3 or 4, when you're adding bottom or top.

Didnt have any rack space and just bought a bigger 500series rack this week. Out of interest Noah, would you put the Awtac pre in the same camp as Neve, or more towards API? Thinking of grabbing one of these for vocals spesifically. Might have to let the Heritage 73jr go then Btw. Sorry for off topic fellas

Thanks noah shain. I went back and read your Dead Sara threads and that's what got me thinking about the AWtac's. I'm no technical guy but those electronics are incredible looking. I don't think there is an empty spot on those PCB's. I don't know how those electrons don't get lost trying to navigate through that circuitry........ I'm looking for an EQ that excels on both guitars and bass, it sounds like the AWtac mid range would work well. Plus they look so cool....lol.

I'll add a Pultech at some point but the main reason I don't want one now is because I'm looking for an EQ with many midrange options for guitars and bass. Pultechs are just lows and highs. I'll pick up an EQP-WA down the road.

Guitars and bass yes! it's wonderful on both of those sources. I don't remember doing any acoustic guitar with it but I wouldn't hesitate to. I'm sure it would be lovely.

To me it make most other mic pres feel like utility pieces or something. Signals sound more "finished" or "polished" coming out of the AWTAC. The AWTAC site explains its design heritage better than I ever could.

Yeah, the Great Rivers EQ-1NV and EQ-2NV's can handle anything, seriously. If they can handle mix buss duties then they can handle anything in the mix as well. The GR eq can also be run into your pres for more tone. Kind of a cool feature not a lot of people know about.
The Great River Harrison EQ's (500 series) are nice as well but different then the rack mount eq's. The Rack eq's have a variable q (most bands have a 3 position q) amazing tone and flexibility. If I had to pick one over the other I would lean towards the rack eq's. Again, that is why they are high on my need/want list.
One thing about GR gear is that you can buy with confidence in the sound, function and customer service. One of the top Pro Audio companies for a reason.
