Interesting info that Jack Endino wrote about how all tape machines have a different sound . At the bottom you can see a comparison with a digital converter which is flat . www.endino.com/graphs/index.html

Quite a difference, but it makes sense.

Had my Otaris ( MTR 90 and 10 ) in the shop for 3 months being rebuilt and brought up to spec. Lucky Insurance covered everything. I"ll take 1 db down @ 40 HZ and all the other abnormalities to have my analog sound back. Can't wait to get the studio finished and the machines hooked up again.

I think my highly modded Studer is good to within 3/4 of a dB. Not too shabby. . My MCI on the other hand...as sloppy as the frequency response is it sure does sound delicious. Brad

I'm currently rebuilding my ampex atr700. not a high end machine but fairly decent and made everything sound pretty good to my ears. it is full of carbon comp resistors so I'm recapping it and swapping out all of the resistors for 1% film.
easy work as it's built from modular cards.
I missed a 4 track mci deck recently that went for $350
always on the lookout, so when the times right i'll grab another 4-8 tracks of something.
